Does anyone know if SW charges to fly standby? We are coming late january and are from Indiana and weather can always be an issue. If a storm is coming in we were thinking of trying to fly standby the day before our original flight. Also what is a cheap hotel by the airport? Thanks.

They do not do standby. If there is a storm however they may do a Weather waiver. In that case you would be allowed to change to the earlier flight at no cost. Otherwise you must pay the difference between the current fare and your fare.

Not sure if it's standby, but DH flew last month. He arrived a little early and when he checked in was able to take an earlier flight. Of course he was traveling alone and no luggage, so I don't if that mattered. He was happy to get home earlier.

Generally, they'll refund one flight and book the other. So, if the flight is the same price, it's an even exchange. If it's more expensive, then you'll pay the difference. "Standby" only applies to the same day. If you want to fly a day early, that's a change. You won't be able to get through security without buying (or exchanging for) a new ticket.

Actually if your very worried about this then the best option is the Business Select fare as you will be top of the list for re-booking if your flight is canceled. Honestly though I would just book the flights you want on the days you want at the fares you want and then if weather is an issue just keep on top of things. I have always had good experience with SWA including two cancelations due to weather.
