Which would you recommend? We all love seafood (except my DS but he loves beef) and both menus look good and they both get really good reviews. My kids will be 9 & 5 when we go so I don't know if one would be better suited for them over the other.

Flying Fish is my kids favorite restaurant (mainly for the desserts;)). I love the scallops and DH loves the mussels and crab cakes. We've never had a bad meal there.:thumbsup2

I think you'd be fine with either. My kids loved Cape May when we went in 2010...they were 7 and 3. My oldest has asked to go there again because she loves crab legs and ribs, both of which were on the buffet. I'd say, go with whichever you think would fit your kids best from an atmosphere standpoint. My kids would do just fine at Flying Fish, but some meals for them are just better being more "casual".

:thumbsup2 Cape May, hands down!! And the desserts are yummy too ;)

Flying Fish for sure! We go there every time. We're trying Cape May this time, but the menu doesn't sound as interesting as Flying Fish in terms of flavors and preparation. Sure, crab legs and other steamed seafood on a buffet is good, but it's not as tasty as something a chef put together.

Except for the fact that both restaurants have seafood offerings, there's really no comparison. One is an all you can eat buffet and one is a slowly paced upscale dining experience.

If your 5 year old is fine sitting through a 90-120 minute meal, I'd definitely pick Flying Fish over Cape May Clambake. I've had most of the dishes on their menu and I've enjoyed everything. They also offer a wine flight which is nice if you like wine and IMO, FF has the best cheese plate of the WDW restaurants (excluding the one at V&A).

I think Cape May in your case for sure!!!
Enjoy

How can you rate it if you haven't even tried it? It's a must-do place for us and the crab legs and clams, mussels are all steamed right in front of you :confused3 And for your information, it IS just as tasty as a non-buffet of the same entrees  Maybe you should wait until you actually try it to convince others it's not as tasty :rolleyes1 Are we a little anti-buffet for some reason? It's your choice, and the place is packed every time we go, so please do not make yourself go where the flavors and preparation are not that good or the food not so tasty (especially when you've never even tried it).

I've been to both and there is no comparision. Flying Fish is a very NICE restaurant. The staff is over the top helpful with kids and the kids menu is AMAZING! The adult menu is superior to most disney dining places.

Cape May is like a beach side seafood buffet. It's more relaxed. There is paper covered tableclothes for the kids to draw on and the majority of the seafood is steamed. (No flavor questions here... if you steam it isn't not too flavorful... it's steamed!) They do have a nice salad bar and a small dessert bar. I thought the food was very good but that is smelled fishy.

If I had to choose between the two I would hands down pick Flying Fish for the nicer meal overall.

Just curious, how would you fix the crab legs, clams and mussels, if not steamed? Would you boil them? Have you ever fixed them before? Well, we have, many times, and yes, they are steamed and when we have them we sprinkle a dry spicy seasoning on them. That's what we do for crawfish and blue crabs anyway, but with crab legs, you just dip them in butter. They have a very nice salad bar, non-seafood dishes, and very good desserts. I don't find the smell fishy, at all, but if you are that sensitive to any smells, it probably isn't for you. :goodvibes

I'm not sure why you are so defensive about this restaurant. :confused3 I like Cape May. We go there normally once a trip. I was agreeing with you that if you steam crab or anything really there is no "blandness" that is the restaurants fault. It is a way of preparing food that let's the natural flavors come through. (I was disagreeing with the people stating it was bland. It's steamed... it's hard to mess up really.) I have in fact made crab legs many times and I don't think that Cape May does anything wrong with how they prepare them.

As far as the smell... it smells. The same way any fish restaurant smells. Fish has a distinctive odor. When you have a large amount of fish in a restaurant night after night you are going to have some smell. That's just a fact.

Having eaten at both, we tend to prefer Cape May when the whole family goes, mainly because we love buffets for the kids since you can get their food right away and keep them happy longer (so you actually get to enjoy your meal, too!)

Sorry, from your post I misunderstood, thought you meant it was bland, being steamed, because it should be done some other way - my mistake :goodvibes As for being defensive, seems so many people complain about it and then turn around and get more ressies - another poster on another thread right now (GeorgiaHoo) is asking how hard is it to get in Cape May, as well as some other buffets, without ADR after complaining so much about them. He/she admits having a car and other options, but would rather have the DDP and complain - that really ticks me off. Sorry, again, rant over;)

both good but may be more to chose from for your son at cape may:surfweb:

I've only been to Flying Fish & it was our first visit this last December. It was totally awesome! It now ranks as one of our must repeat on the next visit restaurants! It is abit more upscale than some places & we were a couple so we enjoyed that also.

With kiddos Cape May might be more fun. We have eaten breakfast there & were very impressed. Their buffet was really good for breakfast. However, we haven't eaten supper there.

I cam't advise as to the kids--especially if a "fun" time is part of the equation.

But for food Flying Fish is much the better restaurant.

My husband and I went to flying fish for valentines day, and it was fabulous! The mussels were served in a creamy pesto broth, and I could've eaten just that! I ordered the scallops, and thought they, and the myshroom risotto was kind of bland. My husband's steak was fabulous! Best steak I've eaten at WDW - even better than le cellier. And the banana Napoleon was great!

We plan to try cape may buffet when we go back with our kids. We have 3 little ones, and it just seemed like a much easier place to take them. There were only a few kids at FF when we were there, but that's likely because it was valentines day?

Thank you all for your comments. I am still kinda up in the air but I think I am leaning more towards Flying Fish. My son does fine at long meals. We ate dinner at LeCellier last June (his bday is in July so he was still 3) and he was fine up until the very end and my DH just took him out to the gardens while my DD finished her dessert and I paid the bill. This will be planned as our last night's dinner on our trip so I kinda wanted something good but at the same time I didn't know how "kid friendly" FF was or if we would be better off at Cape May.

I was wondering the same thing about these two.

WE LOVE seafood. We enjoying both types of settings and are doing Askerus, Tepan Edo and also, Sci-FI. We definitly could use a suggestions. Since we have the others places picked out that are more time consuming, we didn't know what was more laid back and down to earth.

So, they cook the clams and crabs at your table, or out in front for everyone to see?

Also, for the kids, my 5 year old, can she get a normal disney childrens meal like chicken, or is it all buffet for them too?

Thanks for the input!!

It really depends on your kids and what you want for them that night. Flying Fish is awesome, great food, fun time, but like another poster said, it depends on how long your kids want to sit there and what they want to eat. Kids menus at non-buffets are disappointing to my kids. We try to balance out buffets in addition to our "menu" places so that they get to choose from a bigger variety some nights. Cape May's clambake is one of our favorites.
