How does disney determine it? Do you have to be at level of a native speaker, for example?
Good info to have in my back pocket.

If I remember correctly from my supervisors telling me, you basically talk on the phone to another cm in that second language. You are asked questions that would be similar to what guests may ask you. So it's kind of like an interview I guess but in that other language to test your proficiency. (and sorry if none of that makes sense. I woke up like 20 min ago lol)

Cast Members applying for language pins are not expected to be totally fluent in their other language or languages. However, they should have a level of proficiency that allows them to be able to respond to Guest questions and provide appropriate service in a coherent manner.

I have my language pin that I earned on my just finished CP (spring advantage 2011) and they just want you to be proficient enough to communicate. I have my language pin in American Sign Language and for that test you physically sit down with an interpreter and they test you on your skills. But from what I've heard the other tests aren't too bad. Good luck!!!

I'm currently in russian 1, and I asked my professor how much we should expect to know after 2 semesters of it, and she said "enough to get by if you went to Moscow, and a solid beginner vocabulary and grammar"
do you think that will be enough to even try for a pin? Mostly out of curiosity but it would be a major nod in my favor if I could put this on my application.

I would go ahead and out basic Russian on your application and it's definitely worth it to try to take the test when you get to FL. From what I've heard, they just want to know that you can have a basic conversation in that language.

They're looking for what would be considered conversational skills- a basic understanding of the language that'll allow you to communicate with the guest. I'm currently learning French and German so I can have those two under my belt to help further my skills with the company.
