Flu shots

CEDmom: My DBF also works in health care so I'll remind him about flu shots(unless he should not get one for some reason).Maybe I should then?

If there isn't anticipated to be a shortage, I'll probably get one in October (usually get one by early November). Otherwise, I'll pass and let folks more "at risk" get it.

DH works in sales & service for a very large company that sells cleaning supplies and dish machines. So, he's in the kitchens of hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, hotels and/or schools on a daily basis. Because he often times has to repair their equipment he usually ends up handling dishes, glasses and any other kitchen "stuff" that need washing. :scared:

So with all he's exposed to on a regular basis, you can bet we BOTH get flu shots. We usually get them in late October.

ps...
I could share some really nasty stories about all he's seen in those kitchens over the past 5 years, but that's another thread altogether. :crazy2:

The flu is not a throw up illness. It is a respritory illness. Stomach viruses are not related the influenza, the viral illness which the "flu shot" is directed toward.

I think some people are more susceptible to the flu than others. When I was younger, I never got a flu shot, and I got the flu EVERY year (sometimes twice). Since I started getting the flu shot 10 years ago, I've only gotten the flu once. That year, I had gotten the shot in September, and I got the flu in March - probably my immunity had worn off. Since then, I wait till at least October before getting the shot.

BTW, you can't get the flu from the shot. The shot contains the killed virus. The flu knocks me out for at least a week to ten days - I'd much rather take the shot!

I won't get one at all. I can handle getting the flu and I'd rather have a natural immunity to it built up from catching the bug previously. For example, everyone around me has been sick for weeks but since I had it earlier this year, its not effecting me at all. Sounds great to me.

I will be getting one for me and also for my daughter. She has gotten one every year since she was a year old. I have NO desire to have the flu and would rather have a 10 second shot than a 7 day flat on your back illness. You can not get the flu from the flu shot, some people say oh they did, but you dont. When my daughter get a fever within a day its up over 105 and she is off to the hospital, I would rather do anything I could to avoid that and if its hearing her cry for 30 seconds from a shot its worth it!

We have. We'll be getting ours.

DS16 has asthma and DH is diabetic, so DS13 and I also get the flu shot to (hopefully) keep it out of the house.

I had the flu once when I was in my early 20's, and it felt like I was dying. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
