Flower and Garden Show - BEWARE OF BEES!

We learned this the hard way! The Flower and Garden show (or whatever it is called) that is going on now has some wonderful plants and flowers to look at BUT just because you are in Walt Disney World don't forget the basics of nature. Flowers attract BEES!!!!!!

We were walking along the main pathway near the Tree of Life when a bee stung my 5 year old daughter. A Security CM came rushing over when he heard her scream and escorted us to First Aid. The nurse there was SO SWEET to us.

My daughter was miserable the rest of the day though. Just be careful of BEES! After this happened we paid extra attention and there were really LOTS and LOTS of bees at all of the parks - much more than usual.

I used to work at a botanical garden, and can offer some tips in this regard:

Keep sweet fragrances on your person to a minimum. Try not to use scented sunscreen, perfume, makeup, hairspray or lip balm and be especially wary of fruit scents. If you smell like nectar, bees will be attracted to your vicinity. Don't carry open containers of sweets or sweet drinks in an area where bees congregate.

Also, try to avoid wearing clothing that is in bright flower colors, esp. orange, yellow or violet. Move slowly, and refrain from making a lot of noise. (Not saying you have to go slow-mo, but it's not a good idea to walk along singing Itsy-Bitsy Spider with hand motions, for example.)

My daughter was wearing a dress from The Disney Store - pink floral print with Cinderella on it. She also has orangey/red hair so I guess she looked like a giant flower to the bee. The only fragrance she would have had on was sunscreen and maybe a little hair spray.

It was her first bee sting so we luckily found out that she is NOT allergic to bees! Her finger swelled up but other than the pain from the sting there was no other adverse reaction.
