Hi there,
Wondering if you Floridians can tell me if you know what the forecasters are predicting for the weather in Florida for Aug.? We are doing the looong drive from Toronto and worried about potentional hurricanes. Should we be worried?
Thanks so much!

Hi Torontogal,

The weather in Orlando for August will be HOT and HUMID with chance of occasional thunderstorms. After it rains HARD for 20 minutes, it will be even HOTTER and HUMIDER. This will be followed by a long period of dark when it will still be hot and humid.

This is the same prediction for every day in June, July and August

As for hurricanes....if any of us could predict that far in advance, we would be much wealthier than we are at the moment.

There is just no way of guessing about things like that.

The good news is that hurricanes dont surprise us here in Florida. We usually know about them several days in advance.

Humider... Isnt that where youkeep cigars? LOL

Kevin you should be an on air weather guy... why do they even bother having those in Florida.. it is the same everyday anyway!!

Thank you so much! I am not as worried anymore. I actually love the heat and humidity, but can do without the hurricanes!
Thanks for your reply!

I have been to the World for the past 3 Augusts and it is EXACTLY how Kevin says it is!

Definitly take some of the advice John gave in his report on how to stay cool from this week's podcast. It was very good advice:thumbsup2

Anyone know WHY it rains so hard? Why the big, giant raindrops???

It rains like that so rarely here that one day when it happened I commented that it was like Florida rain.

If I had to, I could explain a snow belt because I live in one and the weather guys explain it at least once a year. So I'm wondering if living there has the weather guys explaining ad nauseum the Giant Florida Rain. Thought maybe you all could pass that along.

Or not. :)

I was "fortunate" enough to be staying at Disney World during a hurricane. It wasn't planned.

DW and I were meeting up with friends that were driving down from Michigan and we were going to stay with them at Saratoga Springs.. We decided to stay at POP for a couple of days before our friends arrived.

It just so happened that Hurricane Jeanne decided to visit Central Florida. I was very impressed on how well Disney took care of their guests during the state of emergency.

We were not allowed to move to SS during the hurricane. They required we stay at POP for an extra day and they extended the special rate we had (Florida Resident).

We also found out that all of Disney's properties are built to Category 5 standards. Many Floridians in the path of a hurricane will typically stay at Disney to ride out a hurricane.

We've owned a home in Central Florida for 7 years now and we've only had one hurricane come through the area. It seems that Central Florida is somewhat insulated from most hurricanes. By the time hurricanes make their way across the state, they typically lose most of their strength and are just tropical storms.

Now, I think I've just jinxed the area. Watch all the hurricanes hit Central Florida this year. And it will be all my fault!! :(

Florida is a skinny peninsula. The warm, wet air comes from both sides of the state....

I'm going to need a pointer and charts and graphs....

Ok....I' dont really know.

Amazing how much a simple question about the weather can generate so much discussion! LOL :)

Actually you're on the right track there. Many days you get sea breezes from both sides converging over the center of the state (or thereabouts) and when the opposing air masses collide you get lift, and then thunderstorms. The big drops and heavy rain are indeed directly related to the proximity of all that nice toasty Gulf water, and the Gulf stream on the Atlantic side of the state. Loooots of moisture available to make great big drops. :thumbsup2

Yeah....what BeamsofLight said.....:thumbsup2

you can recreate Central Florida in mid August in your kitchen, it will even approximate the WDW experience. Fill your largest pot 3/4 full with water and bring to a rolling boil. Wait in line for 120 min. while standing under a heat lamp, if you have a fast pass you may skip this step. Now get in.

You can not plan for the hurricanes, however you should sooo plan for the heat. Went last August with Wife (plus one in the oven) and 7 year old. We learned The first day that is so different in auguest then in December when we usually go. As any commando would plan to do disney we did the same run here, run there..until hear exhaustion was visiable on both my wife and daughter..From then on we changes our park plans. The one thing that really helped, well two things..1. drink alot (my daughters favorite was the slushy drinks very refreshing and helped to keep her cool) 2. and just as important as keeping to fluids, we took a break everyday from the parks during the afternoon and wnet to the hotel pool and just relaxed, refreshed. Good luck, stay cool
