Do the toll booths from the airport (MCO) to WDW have coin operated booths, or do I have to buy the expensive pre-toll pass from the rental car company? Are there any other alternatives?

We always have fun saving our quarters for our trips. Yes, there are cash booths along the way either coin or a real person. Just stay to the right as the cash lanes branch off from the main highway and then merge back to the main lanes. Some local toll booths are coins only. :drive:

In the WDW area, the in-highway booths all have cash lanes with an attendant. Bills and coins are accepted, change can be made, but exact change makes things go a bit faster.

Be aware, though , that the booths at some off-ramps are un-manned and require coins only, and don't make change. It is generally a good idea to have a handful of quarters with you if you're going to drive the toll roads.

(Side note - the folks on the Transportation board are the best-equipped to answer your questions on getting from place to place, although this one was simple enough for even peons like me to handle.)

If you go on Rte 417 to get from the airport, then you'l have manned toll booths. You might want to check on the $ amt that will be charged if using the prepaid "Sunpass" from the rental co. I know the tolls are cheaper for us (Florida residents) by using the Sunpass instead of paying cash, but don't know how that carries over to visitors. I-4 doesn't have tolls, so good on that part for you.

Good point from Cigar95. Before moving here, we were stuck at an off ramp that took exact change only (no attendant) near All Star Resorts. We were digging through the car seats to find change!

Not all tolls are manned so you need to make sure you have exact change.

As our trip gets closer our kids always love throwing the quarters they have or find into our "toll money" ziploc bag. Then we just put the Baggie right up front between the seats so that we know right where it is. Although once it got packed into a bag then put in the truck so we had to pull over to get it out to pay the toll. And kids love to watch dad tossing the change into the unmanned booths chanting please don't drop it please don't drop it. Lol

Getting the passes from the rental company work out a lot more expensive. You will need a bag of change. Tolls vary and as PP's have said not all tolls are manned so you do need to have the change. We use route 417 from the airport to WDW and if my memory serves me correctly, we hit several tolls ranging from 50 cents to $1.75. As long as you have change with you, I'd stick with paying cash.

Is exact change quarters, or are we going to need some nickels and dimes?

1) All toll booths are multiples of quarters (25¢, 50¢, $1,00 $1.25, $1.50).
2) Fortunately, all toll booths take nickles, dimes, quarters.
3) Just take a roll of quarters with you.

As a former south FL resident, I can identify!
Please don't fall, please don't fall. . .
Sunpass was such a relief!

Bring more quarter than you think you need!::yes::

Or, if you go to Florida frequently, get a portable SunPass and register it for use with your rental car.

The beauty -- if you ever drive yourself, you can register your personal vehicle and use it with that car, as well as with any other car you might drive in Florida. Just be sure to log into your account and associate that car's license plate with your transponder to avoid getting violation notices.

If you take the route I do (which is exit 1B for toll road 528 west, then when toll road 528 ends taking I-4 west to WDW), there are two tolls, both of which are manned 24/7. Occasionally the rates change, but as of the last time I drove to the airport (on 12/16) the rates were $1.00 and $1.25.

Hope that helps :]

In our case it was "Please work, please work..."
We went through the exact-change lane and the machine wouldn't give us the green light. So the attendant came out and whacked it a couple of times, and it still didn't work. So he waved us through.

I'm still waiting for the $100 ticket (plus handling fees from Alamo) for that.:rolleyes2

You won't get a ticket if the attendant waved you through, and speaking as an FL resident, I've never seen anyone actually get the $100 ticket, you'll just pay the toll by mail and pay a small admin fee.

If you got often enough, you can get a sun-pass that has the suction cups on it and you just put it in the window of the rental car when you get it.. We do this as we drive around a fair amount and it allows us to pay a cheaper price for the tolls. There is no monthly fee for it and we have had it for years.

I have a portable sunpass I ordered from sunpass.com. my car is listed as regular vechile ( it has never seen FL) and I just log into my acct. and register rental when I'm get to car in airport or at cruise rental place.
