FPL has a rebate program for certain household energy saving improvements (insulation, new appliances, etc.). I didn't even know that this program existed until my neighbor told us about it. We wanted to add insulation to our attic, but instead of doing it ourselves it worked out to be cheaper to have it done by a contractor who was on FPL's "preferred" list.
Anyways, how it works is that you call FPL and set up a free "energy audit". We called on Sat. and it was set up for the following Tues. They come out and assess your home's energy efficiency. If your insulation is below their standards, they offer you a rebate of between $150-$300 towards getting R19 blown in on top of what you already have by one of their preferred contractors. They call 3 contractors on the spot and get quotes, and then you select the one that you want to go with. They give you the prices minus rebate (it's instant) right then, and set the appt. up for you right then.
We did the energy audit last Tues., and this morning the new insulation was blown in. We did opt to pay for the space over the garage to be insulated also, since the FPL rebate program only covers the portion of your house that is under air. It cost us a smide over $300 total after rebate for the entire job, which was a lot less than it would have cost us to do it ourselves. The contractors were great too...they showed up on time and they were able to do the job much more quickly than we could have.
FPL also gives you a printout of your past electric bills, so you can compare and see how much you save after the new insulation (or new appliance, if that applies to you) is put in. Hope that this helps someone! I know that we're trying to get our energy bills down as low as possible with the rising fuel costs
