Florida Resident Question

We are moving to Florida soon and a friend told me they have a new resident tax. He said that when you go to buy the Florida license plates for your cars that they make you pay over $400 per tag as a new resident type fee. Please tell me if this is true. Our budget is very tight to move and I can't afford $2000 in fees like that.

When hubby and I moved to Florida in 1991 that $400 fee was in place. I think it was called an impact fee. I think it was supposed to cover the sales tax on the vehicle since it was purchased in another state. A short time after we moved they got rid of the fee and I think we received a refund. My sister moved here 2 years ago and only paid the normal vehicle registration fee.

I am so glad they have done way with this. I think it is a load of crap to charge someone a fee of that size to make up for the fact that they didnt get the sales tax. I paid that huge sales tax in the state that I bought the car. It would be like double taxing someone and that is just not right. It is bad enough that we have to pay personal property tax on items we own. Where is the state when it comes to shelling out the money to maintain the items they tax us on. Oh well, thats a whole other discussion.
