Greetings Everyone: This thread has no intention of starting any discussion any specific political candidate, party, office, etc. I just wanted to share an observation that was triggered in my mind from this week's show when Pete, Kevin, and the crew were encouraging everyone to vote. I was lucky enough to be in Orlando at the end of September for a conference at the Contemporary. Because I was there by myself for the most part (DW came at the end of the week for an adult weekend), I wasn't in "vacation" mode, and I was listening to the radio, watching the president speak on TV, watching the debates, etc. Normally, I have a "news blackout" while I'm on vacation. Anyhow, I noticed there are a TON more Presidential election political ads playing in the media outlets in Florida than up here in New York. We don't really get that many ads on TV, and I don't think I've ever heard one on the radio - except for maybe some local races. I guess that's the difference between Florida being a "battleground" state vs. New York which is not really being contested. I was bombarded with ads while I was in Florida. Anyhow, just an observation...

It's important to get out to vote.

AMEN----My mother was an immigrant who escaped Nazi Germany during WW2. One of her proudest moments was becoming a US citizen and being allowed to vote in a democratic society.

Yeah, I think Virginia is considered a "battleground" state too. NY is pretty much considered a "Blue" state, and I see an occasional ad for Obama or McCain on TV, but not that many at all.

Although MA is not really being contested, we get a lot of the NH ads. Man, I'm sick of the Sununu/Shaheen battle!

What bothers me the most are the mailers. Not only do they seem like the worst of the negativity - I feel like they're really wasting our resources on what is figuratively and literally trash.

I do want to reiterate to everyone how important it is to vote in this election.

I totally agree EVERYONE should vote

I wish people in this country would make more of their privilege - I suspect the votes would elect one of the top 2 parties but at least it would be representative

Interesting point about the mailers John. Again, we don't see those at all in NY. I totally agree with you that it is a waste of resources. I always wonder how effective they are too - especially the negative ones. You see time and time again that the American public doesn't like the negative ads, but yet, time and time again the campaigns go negative (again - not assigning any blame here). Does that really work?

Here in Maine, with our lowly little 4 electoral votes, you would hardly know there is an election this year! Our tv and radio ads are for the statewide elections, not the national one.

Right, that was my point. I thought it was interesting seeing what the campaigning environment was like in a battleground state. Because I haven't seen it in many years. Before I lived in NY, I lived in Vermont, and you just know that wasn't a battleground state either.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton held a rally at the Amway Arena last week and Sarah Palin and Elizabeth Hasselback are going to be in Kissimmee at the Silver Spurs Rodeo Arena tomorrow.

It seems you cant leave the house without tripping over a candidate.

Maybe not in Rochester you don't have mailers but here in Long Island where we have a pretty heated and nasty senate race going on between the current senator Craig Johnson and his opponent Barbara Donno, I get mailers EVERY DAY. I usually vote with my party so I never read the mailers but they are definitly a complete waste.

No presidential mailers, maybe the occasional ad on t.v., but you are correct NY is pretty much a blue state.

Yeah we get at least one a day, and as soon as I see any candidates face it goes directly in the trash can.

Craziness here on the outskirts of Philadelphia too. They are considering PA a so called swing state this year too. Yeah I am pretty sick of it. LOL.

PA is considered battleground as well...not as much as Ohio and Florida though!

Interestingly, we have a lot of commercials on tv but I can't remember one mailer for either presidential candidate.

Our local PA house race is fairly heated though so we get a mailer for one or the other candidates about every other day!

We are in Rochester too. My grandparents are in the Detroit area and a while back they were getting tons. They came here for a visit and they said it was a nice break.
