Woke up this morning to a trumpeting racket somewhere close by. Usually it's the sound of these guys flying over the house to one of the nearby lakes. Today, however, the sound was loud and clear and seemed to be coming from the same place!
I snuck out the front door to take a peek and saw two large birds across the street in my neighbors front yard. They seemed to be calling to my neighbor, and when she didn't appear, they saw me and crossed the street!
I ran into the house, invited the dog into a bedroom far from the front window, grabbed two slices of bread and headed back out to see if they were hungry. They were!
I finally came to my senses and ran in to get the camera, but by then they were ready to leave.
Wish I knew what type of bird they are. Please pay no attention to the messy lawn or the ugly driveway. Up until late last year our street was unpaved. Half our driveway is concrete. It stops where the easement is, and the rest is dirt/mulch to the street. When the street was paved, the county threw some gravel type stuff at the end of the driveway as a sort of ramp. We are planning to extend the concrete to the street now that we know they aren't putting in sidewalks or anything. Sorry to ramble on, I am just a BIT embarassed about the state of the driveway at the moment...

<a href="http://www.rossandkaren.org/trumpetbird2.jpg">Hey, lady, got any butter to go with this bread?</a>
<a href="http://www.rossandkaren.org/trumpetbird3.jpg">Where is that rake? I'll help her get rid of these leaves once and for all!</a>
In the picture above, look across the street into my neighbor's yard (she does a GREAT job taking care of things!)
Anyway, see her car? See the pine tree that is blocking part of the view of the car? See those red things in front of the pine tree at the tip of a shrub? That is one of her pointsettias (sp?) in bloom. They seemed to bloom late this year. The first year we moved here, they had a gorgeous papaya tree (bearing fruits!) in a bed near the front of their yard. We got a short freeze and the tree didn't make it. Although I dislike papaya, I've been toying with the idea of planting one just becuase it would be cool to grow one!
<a href="http://www.rossandkaren.org/trumpetbird4.jpg">I don't think this was a good idea. Mom always said not to take food from strangers, and she looks very strange.</a>
