Is there a need to book excursions in the Florida Keys or can you easily walk/taxi to shops, restaurants and beaches? TIA!

Key West is very walkable. You can also rent a golf cart to get around.

Or take the Conch Train hop on-hop off to get around. If you see something that interests you, get off !
