My sophomore in high school is beginning to think about what comes after graduation. She is my creative child and will most definitely be headed toward a "creative career." Although we live in Georgia now, a move to Florida may be in our future as she begins her college days. Right now, her interests are in theatre, but graphic design is also of high interest for her. Her theatre desires really have nothing to do with performing, though. She has the technical, production, design kind of mind. She's leaning heavily toward theatre education. Obviously, I have done tons of research into Georgia colleges that would fit her needs, but I have no idea about Florida schools. So, I'm open to any and all suggestions!

As an aside, does anyone know anything about Disney's career start program? I found it while looking at the college program for my older daughter. This might be a less traditional option for my sophomore, too. I'm including a link just in case anyone is interested.

Thanks! Anyone else?

In Georgia we have a website (gacollege411) where you can search all the schools and the majors/degrees offered. Is there a site like that for Florida?

Full Sail is very very popular for any one going into the Arts. I can tell you UM is not a good choice for technical theater. Although it does have a good group, it's just small.

Thanks! We'll look into Full Sail. Anyone else?

Full Sail isn't a state supported college, is it? If it doesn't need to be a state school, look at Emerson in Boston.

Full Sail is a for profit institution. It isn't a typical public or private BA granting type of school. Just something to be aware of.

FYI - When Full Sail came to my DD's school, the representative said that the students whose parents couldn't afford/qualify for loans in their own names would open loans in their own (the students') names. You might want to Google 'Full Sail scam'. We've also found out that the school apparently fudges their job-acceptance rates...graduates who get a job at Blockbuster are counted as getting a job 'in the industry'.

agnes!

Check out the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. DS #1 thought he wanted to go to school for some type of media. He did a semester there and liked it, but decided he really wanted to go for computer programming so he transferred to a local college.

We looked at Full Sail and after really checking it out decided it wasn't what it seemed to be. A couple of years later I had a co-worker whose brother went to Full Sail and was unable to find work after he graduated.

Check out facts.org.

Interesting information about Full Sail. I'm thinking that one may be off the list. Here at home, Columbus State is her first choice. They are one of the few that we've found that offers a BsEd in Theatre Education.

I found a book at Borders in the same area with other college search books that was a directory of colleges for the "creative" student. It had listings of the best schools in all kinds of arts (visual and performing) areas, as well as info about how to do a creative resume, interviewing, auditions, etc.

Thanks! I'll check our Barnes and Noble.

Isn't the Art Institute also a for profit School? I seem to remember reading that it was..... overpriced and records couldn't be transfered. I'm not sure this is the case, though

If she really wants to attend college in Florida and you are considering moving, try to do before her senior year. If she attends a Florida high school for one year and you are a Florida resident for a year, she will be eligible for Florida Bright Futures. This program pays a portion of a student's college costs. It is only good if the student attends a school in Florida, but it is accepted by many schools, including Full Sail.

If she is considering theatre or film, FSU is also an excellent college.

My DD is a Junior at Ringling College of Art and Design, on of her roommates is in the Graphics Art program and loves it. My DD is in the Computer Animation program and her BF is in the Game Art Design program. Basically, the #1 rated college for CA and GAD in the nation, 4th in the world. The have a digital art/film degree...lots offered but the price is just as brutal as the workload is..

her boyfriends work was highlighted Game Developer Magazine

the school is in Sarasota

This one I know. It's highly, highly rated among the creative ones. It's also extremely competitive. If FSU is on her "radar," then we most definitely need some backups! ;)
