Technically speaking can someone tell me what the difference is between a flip-flop and a thong (shoe)? They look like the same thing to me! I thought maybe a thong was a fancier flip-flop, but some of the ones in the new Woman's Day mag look just like flip-flops to me!

I always thought it was like "Pop" versus "Soda"

just a different word for the same thing?

flip flops are what you wear on your feet, thongs are what you wear on your um...other parts

flip flops and thongs are the same thing...I think people started calling them flip flops when thong undies came out. not something you want to confuse! LOL!

OKAY there! That's why I put (shoe) after thong in my question!!!! ;) I knew someone would say something about that! :teeth:

Back in the old days when I was growing up, a thong went between your toes, while a flip flop was a band across the front of your foot. Now there doesn't seem to be that distinction. I could never get used to that strap between my toes so I was never a thong wearer.

I've heard them called flip flops my entire life. It wasn't until a year or two ago that I heard someone refer to them as thongs. I remember thinking that I didn't want to know that they wore thong underware! EWWW! But then I realized what they really were talking about. :o

they shouldn't be worn - they show too much feet... eeewwwwww

maybe its a regional thing? I grew up in So. California and we always referred to them as thongs. my husband grew up in Boston and calls them flip flops

When I was little we referred to them as "thongs" or "flipflops". I now refer to them as flip flops but it seems mom did not change. We were waiting to eat in a fancy restaurant and mom asked in her loudest voice to me, "is it you or your sister that does not like to wear thongs?":o I wanted to crawl out the door. To save face I replied, "If you are talking about flip flops it is my sister that does not like them". The waiting watching crowd let out their breath and burst into laughter. I told mom the word Thong spoken loudly in public was no longer appropriate:smooth: :p !

I think flip flops are the thin, cheapy stuff. Thongs (for feet;)) are a little higher grade. I don't like to wear either one. My toesies don't like the discomfort of either.

Von, just like those eyes I posted, these are mine too.;)

I thought flip flops were the cheap rubber kind and thongs were cheap rubber with bamboo stuff on them and had a wider band and was made more out of fabric...

Basically that is what I thought until I saw the Woman's Day page on them. Guess that isn't the case any more.

I blew out my flip flop
Stepped on a pop-top
Cut my heel had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's my own damn fault
Yes and some people claim that there's a woman to blame
And I know it's my own damn fault

From the Buffett Changes in Latitude Changes in Attitude album released 1977

LOL Bibbidi! My kids looked at me like I was nuts one day when I said thongs (meaning the shoes). I no longer call them thongs but that is what we always called them as kids.

Down here in S. GA they have always been called Flip-Flops by white people and Flip-Flap by African Americans.
