Why are the flights so darn expensive??? (I know the answer, I just don't like it)

Disney has a good deal the week we want to go, but the darn flights are more then the vacation. I know there are people out there that get flights dirt cheap, HOW? I've checked and rechecked and surfed the net until my surfboard broke. :confused3 I don't know. Can anyone help?

Have you tried Southwest? Download Ding to your desktop to get deals....or fly mid-week. If you fly out on a Tues or Wed, you can get super cheap tickets! Good luck!

Have you tried checking flights out of different airports? I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. But when we flew to Disney in May, and when we go again in October, we are not flying out of the closest airport. We are driving an hour and a half to Flint. By doing that, instead of paying over $400 per person, we are only paying $160 per person. Our trip in May was totally spur of the moment, after I found flights for the unbelievable price of $29 per person. How could we pass that up????

Also, when we are even thinking about a trip to Disney, I start checking flights constantly. Out of every airport I could conceivable drive to, and on many different web-sites. Typically, you will save a few dollars by going directly to each airlines own web-site.

It also helps if you don't get locked into certain dates. Pick target dates that you would like for your vacation, but then be a little flexible. When planing our vacation we were looking at going from Tuesday to Sunday. But we ended up saving quite a bit on flights by going Wednesday to Monday.

Remember too that once you see a cheap flight, you better be ready to pounce on it. You don't want to spend so much time thinking about if you really want to buy tickets, that the prices go up, and then the option is then gone.

Hope some of these tips help you out!:)

I live in southern NH and check Manchester, Boston, Providence, Hartford and Portland. I've also found that its usually less expensive to fly on a Tuesday or Thursday. When are you looking at going? SW out of Manchester has had some $89/each way fares recently.

I once found a deal to Orlando under five hundred for all five of us, and I didn't have any money  .. I have never found a good deal since. Isn't that the way it goes.

I also live in southern NH. SW not only has Ding!, but they also have a Low Fare Finder where you can see the lowest cost avaiable for the whole month. I just got my tickets and I'm paying 89 each way. They fly out of Manchester and TF Green. Also, there is Jet Blue, their flights seem to be low most of the time too.

Jetblue has some rates at $89 one way and $104 another, but come on. I remember getting $100 round trip and that was expensive. So $200 per person round trip for 4 people is still $800 and when you want to keep the trip under $2000 it's still a lot for flights. I've been seeing flight prices that are more then the Disney trip itself.

We do alot of playing around on Kayak! We check any and all airports that I am willing to drive to.

Hi Maxiesmom, we also live in west MI. Last week we drove to DTW for the cheapest flight for our trip, we will again in November. I flew Spirit down and Airtran back for the cheapest flights. Usually I can do better flying out of Chicago than Detroit but not this past trip.
Flying out of GRR was going to be $429pp, I was able to do $65 down on spirit pp and $89 back on Airtran. Even doing the $50 priceline hotel the night before and a tank of gas I come out ahead. ($1287 vs $566 for a total of 3 people out of DTW.)

:thumbsup2 for Kayak!

I live three hours from DTW but when I found a price of $119 round trip non stop on Kayak, I booked it. Found a hotel for the night before with continental breakfast and 10 days parking for under $100. So it was well worth driving north 3 hours instead of north for 1 hour for a fare of $220 RT.

Kayak lets you check most of the airlines at one time listing the cheapest first. The prices can change a couple times of day so you have to check often. Another nice thing, Kayak links direct you to the airlines website and you book through the actual airline.

Good Luck in your hunt!

I realize $800 is alot of money, but I'd have POUNCED on that had I found it when we went. (Fares then were $600+ per person out of Boston.) It cost us that much, plus 4 days to drive down.

With gas prices as they are, I'd feel really lucky finding fares from New England for $200. JMO! Don't think they are goign to get any better if a big hurricane hits the Gulf refineries again either...
