Thank God, it was pretty easy to resolve... However, my flight home cancelled with Sunwing on Feb. 13. We had the option to take the day before or after, which we can't do... or get a full refund. We took a full refund and are rebooking with Air Transat... Just when we thought our trip was paid for and we would have no issues!!!!!!!!!!! :confused3

That does happen with Sunwing and other Charter airlines.

They get the gate positions at airports only after the "major" airlines have scheduled theres and they only have a few planes.

Not sure why they would have cancelled a flight that far out unless someone (big company) has booked the entire plane for something.

We had this last summer when flying to Halifax - it was when a hurricane was hitting Jamaica and they were trying to get everyone out who was booked them. Our flight was delayed for 8 hours but we still got out that day.

At least you got a lot of notice.

Your post made me hop over to Sunwing.ca and I noticed my Dec flight is no longer direct! It was supposed to leave at 6:00am and land at 9:00, now its 11 or so. I am regretting booking Sunwing now, I admit I never really thought of the implications of using them, but at the time they were the best price by far, I prefer not to drive down to Syracuse (from Ottawa) in the snow etc. Anyways, at this point I will just be glad if we make it there and back! Also, anyone know if we will still go through customs in Ottawa?

You always clear customs at your last point of entry out of the county and the first point of re-entry. So if you have a lay over in say Toronto then you would clear customs there.

"Word" in the travel industry is that Sunwing is in trouble financially ~ beware of them ~ if they cancel something and offer a refund ~ take it and book something else.

Sorry, a bit of a hyjack but I noticed a couple of TAs on this thread. I don't want you to do any research on this for me, but if you happen to know what will probably happen in this situation I would apprecaite your professional advice:

On Monday, my mom is to fly with Sunwing to camaguey, Cuba for a 6 week stay at one of the hotels in Santa Lucia (Club Caracol I think). But due to the category 4 hurricane presently in this area, what do you think will probably happen? She talked to Sunwing today and they said as of right now the flight is still a go and they will not have any more info. for her until Morning. She is an extremely seasoned traveller but has never quite been in a situation like this. She has arranged for a transfer from Peterborough to YYZ Monday morning so is really hoping to be able to get a little more concrete information prior to Monday morning.

Any info. would be great.

I know someone in the industry and they have said the same thing. I would stay away.

There really isn't much you can do unless they cancel the flight. If she does not show up for the flight and it still departs then she will be out her money. I would travel to Toronto unless she hears something more concrete. This is one of the reasons I don't recommend clients booking until 7 days prior during hurricane season. It is such a risk. I think they will probably postpone the flight but they do have people in Cuba they need to evacuate. Did she ask about traveling next week instead and changing to a 5 week stay?
They may allow that due to the circumstances. Have her contact her travel agent and they will be able to check into that for her.

Thanks for the info. I will pass it on to her. She has contacted Sunwing twice today and they said the decision about whether or not the flight will go will be made by 8 am tomorrow. She was unable to reach her TA today but will try again first thing in the morning.

Sorry I didn't keep up with the thread! Yes, just keep checking back with Sunwing. That's pretty much all she can do... But, I know how it can be, my mom is in Peterborough too!

On a sidenote, we got an amazing deal with Sunwing and that is why we booked through them. No other price could compare. However, when it came to cancelling with them and robooking... we got almost the exact same rate with Air Transat. :)
