Flight costs - I don't get it.

Why is there such a variance in flight costs? I am looking at flights from ABE (Allentown PA) to MCO in December. Flights are varying in price from anywhere from less than $300 to over $900 one way. Will the $900 flights come down? Does anyone actually pay that much for their flights?

I can't see Dec rates since that is too far out but southwest prices for flights in Sept from Philly PA (which looks about 50 miles away) are $78 or $95 on a tues or Weds.

I can't fly during the week - our vacation is from a Saturday to the following Sunday. We like to go as long as possible without having my daughter miss more than a week of school.

Philly is not that far, but Lehigh Valley Airport (ABE) is only about 3 miles from my house. I love the convenience of getting off the plane and getting home in just a few minutes.

Airtran does fly out of ABE. I am thinking of waiting for their flights to be announced.

I started search for my October trip from ABE to MCO. It is normally high at this time. For the past three years (knock on wood), I have gotten great prices in July (anywhere between 59-89) each way. But for some reason I feel I need to start looking now. :surfweb: Gives me something else to stress over.

What I found odd is, I just tried to check booking through miles with USAirway as I have on ticket coming to me, and they are no seats available already.

"When y'gotta go, y'gotta go."

My DH and I had this very same discussion this morning. I can't imagine paying $400 one way for a flight with 3-4 hour layover that arrives at midnight?!?! That's just CRAZINESS!:scared1:

For a leisure route like Orlando, the biggest demand for travel is during the weekend. When demand is higher, prices are higher too.

I am certain that what they are saying is "no seats are available for mileage awards at the lowest level, but if you would like to give us double the miles then we will open up a seat for you."

Airlines generally only open up seats for mileage awards that they don't believe they can sell. Your vacation is 8months out, the airlines don't have a crystal ball that can see what flight loads will be this far out, so they are holding back for more information before giving away seats.
