Hi.

Long story but my ds and his friend booked flights through Expedia. Not what I would do and if I had known, I would have just booked my son’s indi through airlines.

Anyway, I went and checked in my ds today but had to also check in his friend since they are both on the ticket.

I paid for a bag for my son but somehow it went to his friend’s ticket.

I called the airline and they said to just put on his friends luggage tag on my ds luggage.

However, the friend ended up booking a flight for the other day to go down with his gf dor a couple of days before my ds goes and never canceled this ticket for tomorrow, so he wont be on the flight.

He is also checked in, because of me and has this luggage paid for 🤬

Can my son just go to the airport to the kiosk and print the tag, put on his luggage and hand in to counter and his friend be a no show. Would the luggage still arrive?

The airline said they couldnt cancel it for me or move to my son’s ticket.

Thank you.

They are not going to allow him to check a bag under his friend’s name. If they are telling you they will not move the paid baggage fee to your son’s name then I don’t think there is really anything you can do about it besides dispute it with your credit card.

I would make sure the whole trip won’t be cancelled. If friend doesn’t show up for the flight, his whole reservation will be cancelled. Make sure son’s won’t also be cancelled. Third party reservations are tough to navigate. Everything has to be done through them.

I would just pay for proper tags for your sons' bags (or have him pay when he checks in) and live with the cost of the mistake. I would not take a chance on a luggage tag with the name of a passenger who doesn't board the flight!

That’s usually not the case. You can always checkin for your flight without another member of the party showing up. The “whole” reservation getting cancelled with airlines usually involves deliberately not flying certain legs which is called skiplagging. Say you want to go from Austin to Chicago but that flight is $500. Well Austin to Detroit by way of Chicago may be $300 so some people might book that. You’ll make your first flight from Austin to Chicago but once you don’t show up for Chicago to Detroit then your remaining legs will be cancelled. Same thing if you were just going Chicago to Detroit. If you’re not on that flight from Austin then you’re not getting on your flight in Chicago.

I think a luggage tag for someone who is a no-show would be a huge red flag.

They’re just simply not going to let you check in a bag under someone else’s name. The friend is either there when the bag gets checked in or the bag doesn’t get checked. End of story.

Flight is today, otherwise I'd suggest posting on flyertalk. Depending on the airline there might be a solution.

I’ve had this happen to me with justfly.com. Third parties have different rules. Not saying it will happen but to look out. Friends reservation will absolutely get cancelled for return flight if he doesn’t show up to the first one. Her son should be fine.

Thank you all so much.

i just told my ds to pay for his luggage at the airport this morning. For $30 it isnt worth the headache. He purchased his luggage and got on the plane ans his friend was a no sjow, even though I had checked him in.

I just asked my ds to send me his flight info for coming home since not sure if they are flying same airlines. I personally would never book with a third party and was t aware that is how they were booking but it is done and it is what it is.

Thanks all.

Thank you. I will wait until I see if same airline. If not, it should be fine. If it is and they did RT, Ill put in confirmation when I get it and see if frirnd shows up. If not, Ill tell my ds to have the kid call the airline.

Thanks.

Too late for this trip but lessons learned for the future. Let you son's friend book his own travel and then you can avoid last minute changes to those travel plans he apparently didn't bother to tell others about or never thought anyone needed to know.

Yes, I always book for my son. He did tell my ds he was leaving earlier and purchased another ticket but my ds never
thought he needed to inform me, thus what happened, blah blah blah.

Anyway, I just looked and the friend is still on the ticket to come back home so we shall see. His ticket is not canceled.
They are to fly back on same flight.

I wouldn't be so sure. I'd be surprised if the friend's ticket is still valid as he missed the outbound. When they go to check in at 24 hours there could be an issue for the friend.

^^ I agree, if you miss the outbound flight some airlines will cancel the return flight. Maybe good experience for your son and his friend to learn how things work related to airline travel.

I get it but why wouldnt I want them to try to rectify prior to checking in. Ill tell my son the concern and he can tell his friend to call the airline. Hopefully all will work okay.

Thank you. Ill tell my son to have his friend call Expedia or airline.
