Flag retreat question?

Does anyone know if the flag retreat at DL allows for military vets to participate like they do at WDW? If so, is the process the same as it is at WDW? (going to City Hall to sign up). Thanks...

I don't know the process, but I've seen them honor and acknowledge vets that are in the area. It probably would be a good idea to go by City Hall and ask.

Yes.

I don't know the process, however. Each time a current or former military person gets to be "it" and carries the flag away escorted by Disney's own people.

It is really, really cool and they have a photo session with the flag and the military person's family.

I've seen it with current marines, former servicemen, and this really, really fun guy from WWII. I think he was so excited to be picked, he jumped and clicked his heels, or did some sort of dance step.

What a beautiful thing , I never know what this was exactly and I am going to watch it at least once during our next trip.:smickey:

The last time I was there two small boys had the honor. It turns out there father was a marine currently deployed to Iraq. Generally is seems to be vets, though.

I have seen this at WDW and was moved by the ceremony but was not aware that the Flag Retreat takes place in DL. I am going in September with my sister, neither of us has ever been. Her sons are Marines and I know that she would like this ceremony, especially if her youngest can join us. He is currently serving in Hawaii, just recently home from Iraq. Do you need to request to participate in advance? I'm sure that my nephew would enjoy this.

Thanks for the DL info. I am active duty Air Force and was lucky enough to be in the ceremony at WDW. It was by far and away one of the coolest experiences I have had on any Disney trip. We are going to DL in a few weeks, and my father-in-law is going with us. He served 25 years in the Air Force, and I thought it would be just as cool for him. At WDW, I signed up in person at City Hall. They would npt make any reservation ahead of our arrival or by telephone. They had a calendar and let me choose from dates that were available during our stay. They provided a Photopass photographer for the event, with a free picture of choice. I also received a certificate as the Veteran of the Day, and a special pin only available to the participants of the retreat.

I have pics of the Flag Retreat. Not sure I have a video - I'll have to check and see. This is one of my favorite things at Disneyland (patriotic me :) ), and the last time I watched it they honored the armed services separately, playing their "theme" music, including the Coast Guard.

There were several people standing around the flag, and as each song played, the men who had served in that particular service took a step forward & stood to attention. You could feel the pride and patriotism emanating from them. I had tears in my eyes.

I always recommend that people see the Flag Retreat ceremony at least once at Disneyland. I'll find my pics & post them.
