I’ve read that they sometimes allow guests to participate I the Flag Retreat ceremony they have at the Magic Kingdom. Does anyone know how you go about being selected to participate? Thanks.

You might want to check with guest relations. But most of the time it is a random choice by WDW security.
Hey dont miss this ceromony it is great.

It's random choice by Mainstreet Managers (since they are in charge of the flag retreat) There is absolutley no way to guarentee a the place in the flag retreat but your best bet is to hang out by the flag between 4 and 5 and where something so that they know you are a veteran (Since they only choose armed forces vets or active duty).

What everyone else said is pretty much it, check with guest services at City Hall when you arrive at the Magic Kingdom. That's what I did and we were able to do the ceremony on Jul 1st. The CM at City Hall said "Security likes to be the ones who pick" and I asked how they knew who the veterans were but he didnt' have an answer. They do have a book where they keep track so do stop by City Hall. Good luck. It was very moving and fun.

I arranged with Magic Kingdom last year for my husband to participate in the Flag Retreat. It was not easy to do but it can be done. Here are the requirements and how I set it up:

1. First and foremost, you have to be currently serving in the military or be a military veteran in order to participate. If you have never served in the Armed Forces, they will not let that person participate.

2. Next, I called WDW main # and asked for the Magic Kingdom customer relations desk. Once connected I told them that I wanted my husband to do the Flag Retreat and asked who could help me. They told me only the front gate manager could approve that and add my husband's name on the calendar. They had me leave a voice message for the front gate manager at the MK.

3. He called me back after leaving numerous messages (very frustrating) but he did call back, told him what I was asking for, and he put my husbands name on the list.

After the ceremony, they presented by husband with a special Flag retreat certificate and a special military Mickey pin with the Flag retreat logo on it.

We also got a 5x7 of the event. They took a ton of pictures and you get to pick the one you want with the option to buy more ;)

I had read about this ceremony just prior to going to WDW last month. We had never heard of it before, and lo and behold when we arrived one day (5 pm ?) we saw it as it just begun.

It was indeed very moving and I am honored that we were able to see it. I am also glad to hear that it is for active/retired military only. Those wonderful people get such little recognition for what they have done for all of us.

I finally saw this in February 2003. Very moving. The guest that night was a US Naval officer (Lt?) in dress whites.
