What do we all think about the 'fixed week' time-share option that DVC will be offering in Hawaii ?

Based on what has been reported as being told by guides, it does not sound like a big deal that will cause headaches for Aulani owners but limits availability for non-owners.

Only 35% of the resort time will be set week time and that will be divided so it is no more than 35% for any given week and units will be proportionally divided for each week -- some will be studio, some 1BR, some 2BR, some GV. In other words set week owners will have 35% of the rooms at any given time and the other 65% of owners will be competing for the 65% of room availability left, meaning for that group it is not that much different from what it would be if 100% of the resort owners were competing for 100% of the rooms on points. It is non-owners booking at 7 months (or owners who cannot book more than 7 months out) that are more restricted; they will be competing not for whatever is left of 100% of the rooms at 7 months but for whatever is left of 65% of the rooms. If a person with a set week decides not to come, that room time is not going to be available for non-owners.

Also reported is what appears to be a substantial disincentive for purchasing a week. Such owners will not be able to reserve at other DVC resorts at 7 months out. That makes the set week more palpable for far east purchasers but not such a good idea for most continental US purchasers who can get to WDW or DL in less time than it takes to get to Hawaii.

A set week will be measured by total points needed for that week and the purchaser will pay 10% more (creating another disincentive). The purchaser will be able to later switch to a point sytem (thus contributing his ownership interest to the point system) but will be out the extra 10%.
