I am going to Hilton Head this summer with my grandchildren ages 4 & 6 and wanted to take them fishing.
Hopefully for some successful fishing, we catch very little where we live. I am trying to decide whether to book a fairly expensive fishing charter, or whether other DVC members have had a good fishing experience off the pier. Thanks for you help.

My boys 20 and 18 have fished off the pier many times. They have caught several small fish including small sharks, redfish, flounder, sea trout, and small stingrays. These have not been in large quantities though. They have also gone on many fishing excursions where they caught much bigger fish, including larger sharks, cobia, redfish, and mackerel. Your grandchildren are fairly young, so fishing off the pier might be enough of an experience for them. I think Disney and some other companies offer some shark excursions geared toward younger children. You might look into that. Good luck and happy fishing!

Following.

DS 14 loves to fish. I'm hoping he will be happy to go fish on the pier. Does he need a license? And anyone know where to get bait?

Thanks!

If you fish off the pier, you do not need a license. The best bait to use is chicken or shrimp, which you can get at the Kroger right up the road from the resort.

It has been a couple years since we have been to HHI but my kids enjoyed fishing off the pier. They didn't catch much but we used only worms. Someone else there caught quite a bit. Not sure what they were using but they actually said they were going to cook it for dinner!

Great information, thanks Disney Star Wisher. As far as fishing licenses go i understand you do not need them on Dvc
Property, but adults need them if you fish off Dvc property.

You are welcome. And that is correct. If you take a fishing excursion, you do not need to purchase a separate license. It is part of the fee. Another good place to fish at the resort is beside where the kayaks put in.

My kids love to catch crabs off the pier!! There are always people fishing and at the right time of day you can catch a lot. We always get a net at the beginning of the week and bait from the merchantile there, it lasts us the whole week generally. Last year some teenage boys were fishing and caught a baby shark. My kids were amazed, they unhooked it, threw it back and immediately a heron caught it and made it his breakfast. My kids thought it was awesome, I was not as excited to see that :crazy2:

Spending time at the pier is one of my kids favorite things at HHI. Have a great time!!

does anyone know if this is strictly saltwater, or is it brackish at the resort? If salt, then I would say find a place to buy live shrimp and you will be much more successful.
