I have searched this board to find something regarding copyrights and Disney. I have found copyrights with regard to photography in the parks, and also art work being sold. It seems to be "small potatoes" to make a fish extender with Mickey and Minnie heads embroided on or make shirts (which there are a TON on this site).........

How does it work with the embroidering machines? When you buy these are you buying the right?

:confused3

I have a Bernina and the Disney designs that can be bought or downloaded are for personal use only- I can not embroider a shirt and then sell it but I could make someone a shirt as a gift- Only items that I could sell would have to be something embroidered that is not copywritten- So, your own artwork or something you have designed (the Bernina has a function where you can design something on the computer and download it so the machine can embroider it) names of course can be done- personalization and any pics you find that are true clipart- a pic of a rose or something like that-
What is a fish extender and what are you going to do with it?

The Disney cruise ships have metal fish outside your state room where you can hang a "mailbox" of sorts. People who go on the cruise make arrangements through their cruise thread to all have these and they put little gifts etc during the cruise. Here is a link where there is a picture of one.

Shriva: It makes a fish longer of course! :rotfl: :rotfl: I thought that is what it was as well at first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Bourgie,
Thx for the pic- It now makes so oooo much sense to me- We have not cruised yet- actually next year will be our first trip ever to WDW so I was way off key in wondering what these could be- It would be really cool if the resorts had something similar at the doors- I love the RAK idea- Not to mention the excitement of possibly seeing a fellow dis-er is staying where we are at the same time we are by seeing the personalized mailboxes (FE's)- on the doors...
Anyway, I understand now what they are- & for the OP- There are some great embroidery patterns to use to make these more Disney personalized- But on the copyright thing- you couldn't legally sell them unless you had permission- & with the various companies who have these embroidery programs available, there should be a copyright message in the program-...
Now, however, any fonts that you can digitize from online finds... those would be okay- (waltfont, I believe would be okay too) and if you did predecorated fabric (disney designs) and then embroidered names or whatever I don't believe there would be a problem- i.e. if you ever go to craft shows you will see the purses made from disney fabric, betty boop, sponge bob etc- so if they can use the fabric to make their design I would imagine you could as well...

Thanks for the information. How does it work for people who sell on Ebay? There are people who make and sell these there.

Honestly,
I would think it would not be "legal" unless they were given permission- But I can't say- I feel the "extender" itself being made by the individual to sell would make that "their design" - I just know that the copyright information in things like embroidery programs for Disney designs, Looney Tunes, Nickelodeon, etc states that the designs are for personal use- I think the extenders are great and if the person can market them that is great too- I would just be prepared for someone to notify at some point that they can no longer sell them- :confused3
I tend not to get into these subjects...
The extenders I have now seen by pictures, understanding what they are, I think they are cool and even if 5 people used Disney embroidery, the actual design would look different on all of thembecause they all have their own creative ideas of how they will use them-
The fabric sold with Disney designs and others - I have personally seen at craft shows used for aprons, purses/totes, kids shirts, etc- Haven't seem to ever be a problem...
