Fish Extender question

Forgive me if this question is a bit naive or has been asked before (I looked and couldn't find it), but with regards to fish extenders/Christmas stockings/hanging things outside your cabin, what's to keep passers-by (whether kids or adults) from simply reaching into there and swiping gifts people have left at will? Has anyone ever had an experience like this where gifts given were never found or received for that reason?

Self-Control is the only thing stopping them. There have been a few instances reported on here, but doesn't happen that often from what I hear.

We participated in a fish extender group a couple of years ago and will be doing it again next February- its really fun! It was noted that if the FE gifts were personalized in some way, they were less likely to get swiped by walkers-by (who wants to steal a keychain with the name "Amberleigh" emblazoned on it, after all.... unless the thief is also named Amberleigh!). Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing if gifts are stolen, but I like to naively think that everyone is good, and I wouldn't have a way of knowing what they took anyway. Heck, if they want something from my FE that bad they can have it. We were very grateful for all the gifts we received- the best being a monogrammed Captain America pillowcase- its amazing!

As noted, there's really no way to know whether any of the gifts that are dropped in any give Fish Extender pocket actually make it all the way to the intended recipient. One can only believe in the goodness of people that they mind their own business.

I don't worry about the gifts that may have gone missing from my FE pocket. There are plenty of others to enjoy.

That's one reason I think that putting names of the givers on the FE gifts is not a good idea. How do you know that the gift that you didn't receive - if you're keeping track - wasn't lifted by someone? I prefer the "secret" pixie-dust aspect of FE giving.
