Can someone who has experience with this activity please tell me what actually takes place during the time the kids are there? I thought I read that part of the time is spent watching Finding Nemo which seems like a bad way to pass 1 1/2 hours of an experience you pay $60 for. My son is 12 and registered for this activity since he loves fish and is studying Marine Biology in science this year (homeschooled) but if half the time is spent watching a movie, we may cancel...thanks! Amy

Per the Aulani website, this is a 3 hour experience described as follows:

Little ones love this up-close encounter with the colorful tropical Hawaiian fish of Aulani! During this experience, children can:
  • Learn how animal specialists train, feed and care for the marine life at Aulani
  • Prepare fish food and feed it to the fish
  • Enjoy lunch
  • Receive a DVD of Disneynature Oceans and a “Fish Are Friends” logo cinch bag

If anyone has personally experienced the class, maybe they can provide more insight!

I was going over this one and the experience at sea life. The sea life has a few different ones, some are geared as an educational program, the sea life experiences seem more hands on and more beneficial. Also, not sure if you're doing pear harbor, but the have a program at the USS Bowfin Submarine where the child completes a worksheet and they get a patch.

My daughter did this one when she was 7. They made fish food and went to the Rainbow Reef to feed the fish as their big activity. I don't remember her saying they watched a movie, but she got a copy of the movie Oceans in her drawstring backpack.

From what she said, these activities end up focusing on the youngest kids because they have to make sure the 3-5 year olds can follow along. She did not have any interest in doing Fish are Friends again when we go back in December and didn't want to do the lava experiment one either because she remembers they paired her with a three year old and she felt like a babysitter because the child couldn't follow the instructions.... so she just sat there while the three year old played with their experiment stuff. Ugh. She spoke fondly of some of the other ones like Surf's Up with Chip and Dale, so she liked Aunty's.... I think it is good to hear some of the bad along with the good.

Just mentioning it because at 12 your son would be one of the older ones in the group and if he already knows a lot about marine biology it may be a bit boring. My daughter said they try to make it fun, but she was really frustrated that the groups when we were there were so young.

I think I might have mentioned this before, but the biggest problem we had was them teaching fish are friends not food which made for some interesting dining experiences. People paying for a fancy dinner at AMA AMA don't want to overhear kids discussing what they learned about everyone's dinner choices. No movie time that I recall, just the DVD to bring home.
