Hi!
My daughter (17) and I are headed west for the first time next summer and I'm looking for recommendations for hotels in SF. We're thinking we'd like to be within walking distance of a BART station because my daughter wants to check out UC Berkeley while we're there.

Thanks in advance!

We stayed down in the Fisherman,'s Wharf area but took the street car line up to the area around Union Square and caught the BART to Berkley to see the campus.
It was easy and altho touristy we have enjoyed staying in that area on our trips to SF
There is a Hyatt,Hilton,Marriott,Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn & Holiday Inn Express in a couple of block area.

I would stay on either end of the cable car. One end is near the Powell and Market which is near a BART station. The other forks and goes roughly to both ends of the wharf area. You can find lots of hotels within a couple blocks of the cable car line. And it's probably an area you will also want to visit.

If you are going over a weekend you can find decent rates at the 4 Seasons and Hyatt Regency which are in the financial area along Market Street.

The BART runs under Market St.

I like the Handlery Hotel in Union Sq. its close to the Bart station, the cable car turn-around and lots of shopping!

If it's just you and your daughter I'd check out one of the cute Kimption hotels in SF. They are a larger "boutique" hotel chain and their hotels are really really comfortable and really really cute. Nothing at all like the convention hotels in SOMA/US/Financial district. The Hotel Monaco by Kimption is 2 blocks from Union Square (so great for nighttime shopping, just don't stray into the Tenderloin area). There are other Kimption brand hotels all around Union Square, each with different price points and amenities. I'd recommend these over the big chain brands (like Hyatt). It's very SF :goodvibes, and most are near BART stops.

Here's a tripadvisor review of the Hotel Monaco: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...a_Kimpton_Hotel-San_Francisco_California.html

The Palomar Hotel (also by Kimpton) is awesome, right on Market Street next to ALL OF THE MAJOR STORES, seconds away from Powell Station.

Here's a tip----DO NOT walk past 6th street (and at the very least 7th street) at night, or you'll find yourself in the Tenderloin.

Try priceline too - if you use betterbidding.com you can get a really good idea of locations and specific hotels people are getting.

In Berkeley if you are a foodie at all you have to go to Alice Water's Chez Panisse restaurant! Check their site - there is a more casual restaurant upstairs with a menu and a one-menu only a night downstairs. You need to book well in advance though ( kind of a leap of faith - the meal you're going to eat won't be announced until very close to the date since it's all about what's fresh and local)

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was about to ask the same question... where to stay in San Fran. I've looked at the suggestions made already and they look awesome, but the prices are just a bit more than I was hoping to pay. Add on parking and we are way out of my league. I was hoping to pay about $100-$125/night including parking. Will I find something nice in that price range? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Edited to add that it's just hubby and myself, so a nice boutique would be awesome!

We stay at The Palace every year for Chinese New Year. (www.sfpalace.com I think) The Bart station in literally right at the side door of the hotel. (Montgomery Station). It is walkable to Chinatown, Union Square & The financial district.

My kids (3 & 5) just love it because BART is right there and we just hop on and off heading to the mall for groceries and whatever else they MUST have.

I forgot to say that, my husband and I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental. It was OMG awesome, with a price to match. But it is simple amazing to stay 40 floors above the city and having a view from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge. We enjoyed the restaurant immensely.

Westin St Francis, W Hotel on Market, Westin on Market. San Fran is such a small city you can get anywhere in the city in about 5-10 minutes via cab for around 5-10 bucks. Westin St Francis has best rates and is in Union Square so thats my first vote if you are visiting.
