I’ll be going to Disneyland next Sunday for the first time! I’ll be visiting from the East Coast. I’ve been to WDW plenty of times but never DL. I’m staying in Long Beach the night before and will be running a road race that morning. Race starts at 8 and am hoping to be on the road by 9:30/10am at the latest. Sunday is the only day I can do DL so I’m hoping it wouldnt be a crazy idea to try and fit in both parks. I typically don’t do rides like dumbo or Peter Pan (don’t judge me). What suggestions do people have for parking tips and ride strategies. I’ll also be going solo so I have no one to hold me back on my adventure!

To make the most of the time you have (hey, a Disney fan's gotta do, what a Disney's fan's gotta do, right?):
Read this thread for some really good information and an overview of the similarities/differences between WDW and DLR: A DLR Guide for WDW Vets.
If you'll be coming from LB, I'd park in the Toy Story lot (which is south of the parks on Harbor -- look at Google Maps). There are free shuttles or you can walk -- depends on how tired you'll be and how much energy you want to save! You'll go through bag check (no glass containers of any kind, no gum, no weapons or anything that looks like one, no selfie sticks, etc. -- info and details on the DLR website). The no bag line isn't always open, so be prepared that you might have to go through a regular line. Have your priorities prepared before you go: what are the top things you want to do/have to do? to see? to photograph? to eat? to buy? Then pick the top 5 "absolute musts" and do those. After that, you can see how many things on the rest of your list you can get through. Are you planning to buy MP? it will be $10 for the day and will include free PP. Download the free DL app now to start getting used to using it. (Don't waste any of your precious time in the park learning how to use the app -- be familiar with it when you get there!) You can buy your ticket through the app and have it ready to go when you arrive. All you'll have to do is go straight to the turnstiles (skip the ticket booths -- another waste of your precious time!). You'll get a paper ticket at the turnstiles -- hang on to this. You'll need this for the FP machines if you choose not to use MP. Also, you can use this to scan at the FP return lines if you want to save your phone battery. I don't know if you're planning on seeing F! (DL's version is pretty unamimously voted the better show). There may not be any FPs left by the time you arrive, so you might want to book a dining package now to reserve a FP for the reserved viewing areas. HB is the least expensive and would give you the most flexibility with your time. If you do the first show, you can stay in your section to view the fireworks, too. If you want to view fireworks from Main Street/the Hub/the castle, book for the second show. You don't have to do PP, but don't write it off automatically. It is a very special ride at DL because it is one of the few original rides that was there in 1955. Don't waste time during the day on the line (almost always long). If you ride it, get in line just before closing and make it your last ride of the night. Exit the ride to a closed park and walk down Main Street (open an hour after closing for shopping). It can be magical to close out the park!
It's Halloween Time in the parks right now -- super fun! Definitely do HMH! The NBC overlay is so good! SM has an overlay, too -- Ghost Galaxy. Use single rider lines whenever you can -- SM's works very well. IJA's is iffy -- FP works better much of the time.
Sorry to dump all this information on you! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! Good luck with your race!

I really like the idea of making the “5 absolute musts” that does make planning my day easier. How far would it take to walk from the Toy Story lot to the park? Just in case I don’t want to wait for the bus? Thanks again!

If you make your 'top 5 list' and get MP, then I think you'll definitely have a great time and get across both parks. Go for it! and if you do book a F! DP then you can sit down for a while and rest those road race legs too!

Toy Story parking lot has shuttles coming frequently, even backed up behind each other, so I don't think that'll be a problem. Buy MaxPass, set a timer to go off as a reminder when you can buy your next one, and keep 'em coming! Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster, GOTG, TSMM are my must-do items in DCA; Space, Splash, Pirates, Indy, HM in DL. You'll have a fantastic time!

Bring battery back up for your phone or be prepared to buy a fuel rod from one of the vending machines in the park. With limited time, you won't want to waste time with a dead phone or looking for some place to charge it. Free wifi in the park is spotty at best (only works at designated hot spots -- look on the map to see locations), so make sure you have enough data. As far as I know, all major plans work fine in the parks. PP photographers have been hit or miss all summer (but have been seen more frequently since Halloween Time started), so have your camera/phone ready to go at all times. Characters roam all over the parks and are much easier to meet at DLR than at WDW. M&Gs are shown on the app. Roaming characters aren't always listed -- they just show up!
Mobile ordering works now at many places in the parks and CS is pretty good at DLR. Have a credit card on file with the app and have the security code memorized to save time. This can save you lots of time. Do you have any special dietary needs? Ask away if you do -- we can recommend places and menu items.

There’s almost never a wait. 10ish minutes.
