First trip to DL and I'm totally lost on hotels

Me and my best friend are planning a trip Aug 20-24. Doing 3 days of parks with hopper and maxpass. However I can't for the life of me figure out which hotel to stay at. We want to go as cheap as possible without staying in a run down, disgusting hotel. We don't need anything fancy, just something clean, and secure. Can anyone point me in the right direction? We'd like to stay under $200/ night if possible, however if we can't get somewhere clean and secure for that, we'll be willing to pay more. Thanks in advance!

Good luck! I looked recently and couldn’t find much for less than $300/night. I think the Starwars stuff has spiked the hotel prices...supply & demand....

I looked at a few hotel websites that are within walking distance and have prices for those dates in the $200 - $250/night range (before taxes). The Best Western Park Place Inn includes breakfast and is literally across the street from the entrance. I suggest looking at the hotels website to get prices or try Get Away Today and see what they have available. Sometimes they have hotels that throw an extra night in. Good Luck!

I would suggest looking on google hotels and you can see a map view and kind of gauge the prices from there. I always compare those prices to the actual hotel website to see what is cheaper.

Desert Inn is mentioned a lot on the Dis for their reasonable prices and is walking distance. Some others I would check out are that are walking distance are: Candy Cane Inn, Hojos, Grand Legacy, Castle Inn, Anaheim Hotel, Tropicana, Park Vue, Camelot, and Fairfield Inn.

We're staying at Stoveall's and it seems walkable, good breakfast, and was inexpensive.

Best Western Plus Pavilions on Katella has rooms for $159/night for your dates before taxes. With tax, the total for the room comes to $764, so $191/night before taxes.

Our family has stayed at this hotel before and it was VERY clean. I'd totally stay here again. Felt safe walking back late at night.

BW Stovalls is slightly closer to DL on Katella and it, too has rooms for your dates. $164/night at regular rack rate, but if you get a AAA membership, the rate drops to $148/night before taxes.

BW Stovall's includes free hot breakfast. I don't think that BW Pavilions does. It's about a 15 min walk from both of those to the esplanade and you can't cut through the GCH on the way there (you can on the walk back though). The walk is well lit and everything the entire way.

Candy Cane Inn has standard rooms for $157+tax those days.
Desert Inn and Suites is $126.50+tax for a standard room (plus resort charge).

They are both clean, safe, basic motels.

My daughter and I stayed at the Grand Legacy at the Park right down the street from the Eastern Entrance. It was nice and a short walk, plus there was a pizza place in the front that was open late that was good. I think for a double bed room it was about $140 for the night. I just looked up their rates and they are about $190/200 for a regular double room.

This is a good place to start!

ETA: OP, you sound like you are in category #2 or 5 from the above link.

You may be able to find $200 a night for the #2 hotels, and I would encourage you to search for that. Maybe pull up Expedia and use their hotel map feature showing prices? Use that and the Wikimap link I gave:

Two things I think are of use - google maps - to actually see how close you are to Disneyland - because "across the street" does not mean you can just walk across the street and get in. Also, as to how clean a hotel/motel is, TripAdvisor can be a good tool as there you see actual pictures guests take vs what is posted on a website.

This is the map I use with DLR area buildings, hotels and restaurants noted:

Thanks everyone! This was extremely helpful! These are the 3 we are considering. Stovall's, Desert Inn, and Candy Cane Inn. Although Desert Inn seems the most dated, it seems like it would be the fastest to walk? It looks like it is on the other side of S. Harbor Drive. Is there a somewhere to cross close by to get to the main entrance or am I looking at the map totally wrong?

Yes, Desert Inn is by far the closest of the 3. It's basically right at the main crosswalk into the Harbor side entrance to DLR.

The Candy Cane Inn (CCI) is a favorite of some folks around here. One item to note is that it has a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes like clockwork. When you miss the shuttle (as I have a few times, and did not care to wait for the next one) the walk is 8 minutes - at my top walking speed - or maybe 10-12 minutes at a moderate speed.

The also have a pretty good free breakfast.

Yes, Desert Inn is the closest. There is a crosswalk on Harbor that takes you right into the entrance to the esplanade. There will be lots of people crossing there, so you cannot miss it!

I would compare recent reviews on tripadvisor.

Don't know if you will have a car, but Candy Cane has free parking and free breakfast as well.

Desert Inn has free breakfast but charges for parking and a resort fee.

I am not sure about Stovalls!

Try using Hotel tonight you can usually find a very nice room under $100 per night through there, sometimes as low as $50 within walking distance depending on dates.
