Alright, I'm a disneyworld expert, but trying to plan the order of things in the land.

We have a reservation a GCV and will be there of president's day weekend. We usually have an annual pass to WDW so trying to plan the tickets.

Do we need to go ahead and buy tickets for a chance to get the mickey bands? I'd like to book our fast passes in advance. Do we wait and buy at hotel or buy now and link the tickets with the reservation?

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!!

Also...do I need to buy tickets that include magic morning OR does my GVC stay automatically qualify us for that?

Your VGC stay or any on site property qualifies you for MM. They alternate which park gets MM each day.

I'm not a DLR expert, but do have APs. DLR still uses the paper FP:

My family doesn't really use FPs, but I guess they are enforcing the return times now. It used to be you could come back hours after the time stated and still get in the FP line.

Im also a WDW seasoned vet, & making our 1st DLR in February as well. 13th -22nd.... Also staying in DVC studio....

What I've found is this, regardless of how many day ticket you have you get 1 MM for that ticket...Thats mostly for people staying at a good neighbor hotel...Staying at 1 of the 3 on site hotels guarantees that you get an EMH 1 hr. prior to opening that day...Only 1 park will have this per day...I believe its DCA- Sun,Mond, Wed & Fri..And DL - Tue, Thur & Sat... Also MM are only @ DL, not DCA..

Having an AP , no matter which version/level it may be does not get you into either park for that extra hour..

They don't have the bands I think yet, but are waiting to see how it all shapes out in WDW ( when it gets finalized, I think )

Bad news is during the time we are going, is that there are a few things that are being refurb'd while we are there...Here's hoping to some Pixie dust magic..:wizard:pixiedust:

Hi!

I just went to DLR in early December and stayed CRO at DLH.

DLR is REALLY different than WDW. They don't have magic bands and they don't have FP+ and many attractions that are FP in FL are not FP in CA. (Like Peter Pan's flight and Dumbo) The parks get very full of people with APs, in fact most people there will have APs and I found the ticket windows in CA much slower than in FL despite this. (I added a day to my ticket and bought a ticket for DH and it took 15+ minutes to do this.) The CMs also know nothing about the FL parks.

When you stay at a DLR hotel you automatically get Early Entry to one park every day on your ticket. It is a set schedule. MM is for Disneyland proper only and is open to anyone who buys a ticket of 3+ days. We used our early entry privileges. We went to DCA our first day and Disneyland proper our second. I believe all of Carsland is open early, California Screamin', Ariel's UnderSea Adventure, Toy Story Mania, and a few other attractions. You can also pick up your FP for World of Color then. (Highly recommended unless you are doing the World of Color meal packages, think the Fantasmic meal package at DHS.) World of Color was really good, I saw the special Winter edition. We found the lines at DCA not that bad, even post early entry. Our longest line was about 20-30 minutes, but to be fair I was there until 2 with just my under 40 inch character obsessed DD. I thought character lines in DCA seemed shorter. We waited 20 minutes for Sofia vs 1 hour in DHS. I did go back by myself later for an hour alone. I had no line doing single rider for California Screamin' and waited 20 minutes doing single rider for the big Cars ride. That ride gets hands down the longest lines in DCA and people line up during early admission to get FPs after riding it once. It is very well done.

Disneyland proper was another story. It's much smaller than in FL and to me always seems much more packed than MK. The lines always seem awful, especially in Fantasyland. Unless you have to do it, I'd skip Peter Pan in CA because it always has a 30+ minute line, even if you get there as soon as the park opens, same with Dumbo. We spent 2 mornings there and I felt like did a lot less than in the same amount of time in FL.

Getting ADRs is *MUCH* easier in CA. I booked a breakfast with the princesses at Ariel's in DCA less than a week before our trip. You just can't do that in FL.

30+ min. lines...? I'll take that every day of the week for those rides... I've heard of horror stories about 2 -1/2 hr lines for some rides in CALI...

SO glad to hear of more WDW vets coming to visit the original park that made it all possible!!:thumbsup2

Do we need to go ahead and buy tickets for a chance to get the mickey bands?

You can buy your tickets online in advance (that is usually what I do) direct through the Disney website. I do recommend buying in advance so that you don’t have to wait in line at the ticket booths, you just take your printed out vouchers strait to the turnstile. There are no Magic Bands at DLR.

I'd like to book our fast passes in advance. Do we wait and buy at hotel or buy now and link the tickets with the reservation?
DLR does not have the Magic Bands and thus does not have the booking of the FP's in advance. Its just the regular FP system that we all know and love, they do enforce the return times listed on the tickets just like at WDW.

There are a couple of great planning threads that will be super helpful for you in planning.
The first is a thread by Hydroguy "DLR for WDW vets" its a must read:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1162599

I would also recommend you read the thread on Early Admission to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs. As an onsite guest you get early entry to both DL & DCA (Disney California Adventure) on specified mornings (off site guests with 3 day or more passes only get one early entry and only to DL not into DCA).
Here is the link to the early admission thread:

Those tip threads and many more are located in the stickies at the top of the Disneyland Board here on the DIS.

We go to WDW often, but have found we enjoy the size of DL so much better! Have fun!

Sorry to disagree with a prior post, but I find the lines at DL to be much shorter at DL vs WDW. You will not see 60-120+ minute lines there for Soarin' and Midway Mania except in very rare circumstances.

I LOVE LOVE DL and California Adventure. NO buses! Walk easily from park to park. Lots of characters in the park, walking around, interacting with guests in a much more personal way than at WDW.

I will be at DL the same time as you, pretty much. I arrive on President's day.

They will be selling reduced cost passes thru DapperDays.com website. Dapper Day is February 23. Depending on your exact dates, you might qualify for these, it could save you $50 a ticket.

And yes, Peter Pan is super popular at DL, we usually ride that first (no FastPass for PP there).

I now go to WDW and DL each year. I love them both.

That's not true. There have been years were they have offered us early entry. We used them twice in 2012. They did not offer early entry in 2013 to APs but gave us other perks (like extra hours in DCA after park closing).

To clarify, the early entry (in the past) and additional hours for after park closing for APs were on specific dates.

... I've heard of horror stories about 2 -1/2 hr lines for some rides in CALI...

I have seen this for RSR. We usually get into DCA at 10:30-11 on days we go. Whether its a weekend or midweek...the fast passes for RSR have always been gone.

SoCal and SoCal select passes are blocked all of Presidents' Day weekend and Deluxe passes are blocked Sat and Sunday...so hopefully the parks won't be that crowded. Have fun!

Sorry to mis inform about the AP's...This is what I've learned just browsing..I didn't realize they allowed EE in the past....Also Yes on a DL app, the person that was just there this past week, said that the line for RSR went way back towards Bugs land & then wrapped back around to where you'd normally get into RSR..They estimated a 2 1/2 hr wait...Yikes:scared1:

No, that was 30+ minute lines for Dumbo and Peter Pan within 15 minutes of opening on a day rated a 1 by the Unofficial Guide/TouringPlans. By the time we left Fantasyland to wait in line for Innoventions to open at approx 10:45 am, the line for Peter Pan was at least 1 hour and the same for Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland. I have no idea how long they were later in the day as we left at 11:30, because all the lines for attractions we wanted to visit were more than 20 minutes.

Personally, I go to MK in FL during the off season, and even when the standby line for Peter Pan is 1 hour, you can usually still FP it unless it is late in the day or a 5+ crowd day.

RSR in DCA does get very very very long lines. As I said, I saw a crowd of people lining up around 8:30 am in the middle of early entry to get FPs for it when the machines opened at 9. I used single rider, so the line was only 20 minutes for me. Our longest line was 30 minutes for the Chew Chew Train in Flik's Fun Fair which I would 100% definitely skip if I can next trip.

As I said, DCA (where Soarin' and Toy Story are) we didn't encounter any horrific lines. I think Soarin' peaked around 45 minutes and I don't remember how bad the lines were for Toy Story, but when we road it shortly before the park opened to the public, the wait was 10 minutes, which is unheard of in FL.

I don't know how long the regular standby line for RSR was because I used single rider which was 20 minutes. It must have been at least 1 hour though, probably more and the FPs were gone.

However, the lines in Disneyland proper were just awful. We ended up having to buy a ticket for a 2nd day there to even be able to attempt some of the attractions and character meet n greets without 1-1.5 hour lines. (And I should mention we left Disneyland around 11:30 am.)

I love Disneyland in CA in theory. I love the DLH, the rooms are well appointed and huge and the pool is amazing. I love the waterslides which are perfectly designed to allow even young children to utilize them. I love that you can walk everywhere! I love walking, and I always visit DTD in CA vs. FL where I never go there. However, the last two times I've been to Disneyland Park I've been incredibly disappointed with how long the lines are and the lack of FP options. Perhaps if DD was 10 and only cared about thrill rides I would feel differently.

Most of the characters we met (and we met A LOT) in CA were amazing. The Goofy in DCA, Chip at Goofy's Restaurant, Thor and both Tinkerbells we met were truly standouts. However, we also met the all time worst Ariel, Snow White and Cinderella ever at Ariel's restaurant in DCA. (Several other mothers and I discussed in the ladies room how Snow White seemed to not like children!) Character lines in DCA were amazing short. Character lines in Disneyland Park really varied and several of them felt like gyps. In FL, you meet Tinkerbell and a friend. The friend might be a fairy your kid is not into, but I've never been there when it is *JUST* Tink. And while our Tink was one of the best I've ever seen, we still waited 30 minutes to meet just Tink and had no idea we weren't going to be seeing another fairy until we were at the front. We waited over 1 hour to meet Anna. We didn't find out until we got to the front that Elsa was "not there yet" and no one knew when she was due to arrive. This really is not acceptable. The CM kept assuring people Elsa was on her way, but who wants to wait in a 1.5 hour line, with no guarantees at all. I heard another visitor complain about waiting 1 hour to meet one Princess, as no other princess were in the hall, the others were on break. (At least we got to meet 3 princesses in the hall with a minimal wait.)

I'm sure we will go back to the CA parks. We have family in CA. But I honestly prefer DCA to Disneyland itself and prefer MK to Disneyland in terms of lines (at least if you compare off season to off season.)

Our longest line was 30 minutes for the Chew Chew Train in Flik's Fun Fair which I would 100% definitely skip if I can next trip.

Just curious what time of year did you go? That train ride (my toddler loves it, I loathe it) is usually a 5 minute wait. I don't really use a DL app, but I know when Ariel or Monster's Inc ride is anything longer than 10-15 minutes, it's a crowded day. I can't even imagine what kind of day it was for that train ride to be that long!

Heimlich is a very slow loading ride. We don't go at super busy times and we usually encounter lines upwards of 30 min. We all love the ride madly so it's fine with us. I think there's been maybe one time where the wait was barely over the time it took to walk through the queue.

That's really interesting! We must be lucky whenever we pass through Bug's Land. I've never seen a wait for that ride.

We were there Monday December 2, 2013. We went to Disneyland proper on Tuesday December 3rd and then back again on Friday December 6.

My DD is a very petite 3, so it limits what we can go on together. The sign claimed the line was only 10 minutes, or we would not have gotten in line, however when we timed the line it was between 25-30 minutes. ~.~ We waited about 15 minutes for Buggies, before being told by the 2nd person to measure DD that she was too short. ~.~ DD was super disappointed, but they let us on Ladybug ride first because of it. We waited maybe 15 minutes for the Flyers? The ChewChew Train line got a lot shorter right around the time we got to the front. I think we hit it wrong. I loathed it and DD was ambivalent so next trip we are skipping! She preferred TSM and Monsters Inc.

We went on Ariel during early entry (there are only so many rides for the petite among us open for early entry, so we did Luigi's Tires, Mater's ride, Ariel and then Toy Story, before going to Ariel's for breakfast. Our longest line was 10 minutes with Luigi, Mater and Ariel being walk ons.) Post breakfast we headed to Fliks. I think we waited around 10 minutes for Monsters Inc? I was so amazed with the only 20 min line for Sofia! I don't remember waiting long to meet Pluto, Goofy, Minnie or Mickey. We then headed out because DD needed a break and other than shows there are no other rides for the petite.

Again, I love DLR in theory. I just hate that the Fantasyland rides all seem to have 30+ minute waits and no FPs. With a 3 year old it's just really hard and not a lot of fun and I seriously wish they would make sure their characters arrive *ON TIME* Elsa not being there was just ridiculous.
