Yeah! Our first trip(s) home, December 3-9 at VB and 9-15 at SSR, our home resort.
Trip started Dec 2 with our flight from Bos to Mco. We stayed that first night at the Wyndham on International Drive, a pretty nice place and all the better that our $44 bid was accepted on priceline.com. Drove down to VB Dec 3 and arrived at the resort around 12:30 PM. Told the CM at check-in that this was our first trip to VB and our first stay as DVC members, asked for the best available studio unit. We were given a room in Villa building 12 on the first floor. The living room window had a view of the inner courtyard and the terrace a view of the lush landscaping outside but no Ocean view and we felt very closed in, also, we noticed a musty smell in the room. After unpacking all our stuff we realized that we didn’t want to spend six days in this room. We went to the front desk. A different CM at this time. Explained our situation and she found us another studio in the same building on the second floor. A much better room with a partial ocean view and a CM helped us move our things in no time. We knew this would be a fine room for our stay.

The resort is very impressive, a very relaxing resort. The temps were in the 70’s 3 days 80’s 2 days and high 60’s just 1 day. Spent most of our days at either the beach or the pool. Water slide and hot tub were great, pool temp was a little on the cool side but not at all cold and very refreshing. We ate flatbreads at Shutters, quite good. Burgers at Bleachers, very tasty. And then a superb dinner at Sonya’s but very expensive, even by Disney standards.

We did have an “incident” though. On our second night my DW stepped on a blob of driveway sealer tar and got it in our rental car and ground into her shoe before we realized what had happened. We explained what happened to the desk CM and then the night manager. Her communication skills with us were not very good and she initially had us believing that our only option was to take the rental to a car detailer to be cleaned. “We had tried to clean in ourselves with some tar wipes provided to us by the front desk, but that didn’t remove all the stains, After further discussions with the night manager she finally made it clear that she meant that Disney would indeed reimburse us for the cost of cleaning the car. We just did not feel that we were getting “Disney” service from the night manager and decided to wait until the next morning to talk to the day manager. That was certainly the right choice, He could not have been more apologetic. He gave us a very fair reimbursement for my DW’s shoes and our time spent doing the cleaning ourselves and told us if we were charged by the rental car company for damage that he would also reimburse us for that. By the way my cleaning was sufficient for them and we did not get charged. We immediately got the magic Disney feeling back again and kept it for the rest our stay. Mistakes are inevitable in life, so I try to be polite and courteous in dealing with people and in this case it certainly paid. Always remember that even Disney is not perfect and they will try their best to correct any wrongs but it takes tact on our part as well.

We took the Kayak Adventure on Thursday and it was the highlight of our stay, Both of us highly recommend this 4 hour trip, and it’s a bargain at $40.00 per person with the DVC discount. We had super close-up encounters with Manatees and Dolphins. What a great day!
We were hoping to see the Space Shuttle launch on Thursday night but it was delayed until Saturday. By the sixth day we were truly feeling that Disney magic and didn’t want to leave, but don’t feel sorry for us. Next we were on our way to SSR for 6 more days!

Part two to follow soon,

Scott

We're going to Vero in February. Is the Kayak Adventure through the resort, or off-site?

Awesome report! glad you had a ball. We just love VB!!! Two times a year for us! :cool1:

The Kayak adventure is run through disney on certain days. If those days don't fit into your schedule you can go throught the kayak company directly, but will cost $5 more to do that and you don't get the disney transportation. Just go to Eb and Flo's rental in the pool area at VB for all the info. We highly recommend the tour.

Nice report. Thanks Scott. We love Vero Beach and have been there probably 8 times, and I never knew they sponsered a kayak trip. We'll certainly do that next time.:thumbsup2

Drove up to SSR from our 6 day stay at VB on Dec 9. Arrived at 11:45 AM and found the line at check-in to be very long, but it moved very quickly. Were told that no studios were available in “The Springs” or “Congress Park”. Asked the CM which of the available studios she would choose as we had not stayed at SSR before, she suggested an end unit in the Paddock on the second floor “6100 block building”. It was a great choice! A view of a pond with swans and ducks looking toward the Springs with a fountain to our left and the walking bridge to the Springs to the right. Being on the end we had easy access to the stairs and parking lot. Our studio and the whole resort are absolutely beautiful.

The resort is huge, but even though nearly every unit in the resort was occupied it had a very calm and peaceful feel and did not seem crowded at all. The walk from our studio to high rock spring pool was 8 minutes at a very slow pace. We may want to stay in the Springs or Congress Park at a future time but The Paddock was great, don’t know why so many people post they “got stuck out in The Paddock”. The theme pool temperature “where we swam” was very nice, much warmer than VB. Stuck our hands in the pool at Congress Park and it seemed as warm as the main pool, but the pool at The Paddock seemed much cooler. We went to the parks just 3 days of our 6 at SSR, so had time to walk around the resort get to know where everything is and try to decide which sections we might want to stay in in the future. Both DW and I are very happy with our decision to buy at SSR “ we bought site unseen back in April”. We certainly want to try the other DVC resorts “we will be at Old Key West in March” but having SSR as our home resort is just right for us.

We saw the space shuttle launch from the top floor balcony of our Villa Building in The Paddock. I filmed it with the video camera but that does not do it justice. It was an awe inspiring site and feel blessed that we were able to view it first hand.

The food at The Turf Club and Artists Palette is very good. “ I will give more food and DDP insights in another post”. We looked at the open house units and the are just fantastic. Trying to think of some constructive criticism but can’t think of any from our six day stay. The Disney magic was in full force all week. DW and I had a relaxing couples massage at the spa and that was a treat indeed.

We have gotten over our “commando attacks” of the parks and that also added to the relaxing feel of this trip. The Osborne Family of Lights at MGM was amazing. I’m sort of a Scrooge about Christmas but that light show even had me in awe. This was our first trip to Epcot in which the “Wonders of Life Pavilion” was open “It will only be opened until early January”. We saw Body Wars, Cranium Command, and The Making of Me. A CM told us that they lost their sponsor and was not sure if it would ever open again. That would indeed be a shame. The Wonders of Life Pavilion is surely what Walt Disney himself envisioned Epcot being more like, than it has become. We made it to the Merry Mixer at Epcot on Thursday the 14th for a short visit “we had an early dinner reservation at The Coral Reef”. The music at the Mixer was very loud, but we did manage to meet Caskbill and Mrs. Caskbill and have a very nice conversation. Nice to put a face to one of our group moderators. We received a very nice DVC tree ornament as we left the mixer.

Guess this report is long enough for now. I will gladly answer any questions regarding our first trip home. Hearing “Welcome Home” never gets old.

Part 3 to follow soon,

Only been home two weeks and already looking forward to our next trip.

Will add our experiance with the DDP and restaurant reviews for this trip shortly.

Glad you enjoyed your home resort! I really like the studios there, maybe even the best of all the DVC.

Sorry for the delay in this final report.

We bought the DDP for our first trip to SSR. It cost $455.88 for us two adults for six days. The cash price of our food would have been $685.22, so in theory the DDP saved us $229.34. It is certainly a huge amount of food, appetizer, entree, dessert and beverage with TS meals and entree, dessert and beverage with QS meals, and snacks as well. I'm sure that we would not have ordered the same if we were paying cash but still can't imagine how we would have spent $229.34 less than the cash price, so we both believe the DDP is a very good deal in the right circumstances. Even eating just QS meals and snacks at Disney can still cost $37.99 per day per person.

We ate TS meals "Made our ADR's about 3 months in advance" at:

The Turf Club at SSR, Very Good Food. Steak and Lava cake are winners. Service was a little slow, it was very busy that night and we were in a little bit of a hurry, that was the night of the Space Shuttle Launch, my DW had a special food request and the chef came right to our table to make sure that her request would be done to her liking, always the sign of a high quality restaurant when the chef takes the time to do that. Cash price: $83.82. 2 TS credits for us.

Boma at AKL, Our third time there and as always fantastic, the best buffet we have ever had anywhere. DW and I OOOO and Ahhh through the whole meal. A trip to Disney is not complete without a trip to Boma for us. $64.72 cash price. 2 TS credits for us.

LeCellier at Epcot Canada, Superb in every way and certainly lived up to its reputation, The service was excellent, we even tipped our server above and beyond the DDP tip. The steak with mushroom risoto was heaven. I don't want to be responsible for making this place even busier but it will also be a must for us at each trip. $121.30 cash price. 2 TS credits for us.

Jiko at AKL. Our first time there after walking by several times on our way to Boma. A very quiet and relaxed meal as compared to the Boma buffet. The service was very attentive. Appetizers wonderful. Both DW and I had the Beef short rib, It is a world class dish and both of us OOOed and Ahhhed through the whole meal. It was my DW's favorite meal of the trip, I was just hung up on the 2 TS credits for the meal, It was a wonderful meal but not twice as good as LeCellier which only takes 1 TS credit. $126.07 cash price. 4 TS credits for us.

Coral Reef at Epcot Living Seas. A good meal but not OOOO and Ahhh for us, It's a very popular place but just did not live up to the hype. We both had the Mahi and it was good just not the same as the cold water fish we are used to in New England. The service was good, wish we could have sat closer to the aquarium. $113.94 cash price, 2 TS credits for us.

Hope this helps take some of the mystery out of DDP and a few Disney restaurants.

Can't wait for our next trip "Home".

Scott
