Drive day 2--7/31
Continental breakfast in hotel, gas in the car, then on the road at 8:30am. Drive was fine, uneventful, stopped for lunch at Steak n Shake. Yuck. Too expensive for iffy food and BAD service. Excitement really starts to set in for all of us. Our girls created sort of a mantra--i.e. We just had lunch-IN FLORIDA! I just sneezed-IN FLORIDA! OMG-there's a palm tree-IN FLORIDA! DD-16 used DH's cell phone to call her best friend, I'm calling you-FROM FLORIDA! That game occupied most of the last two hours of our trip. This activity annoyed DS (occasionally referred to as Eeyore), as so many things do. Arrived at condo at 4:00-ish. Checked in, unloaded the car, stretched out for a few minutes. Then headed for the Boardwalk. An idea from Disboards-suggestions for your first nite. The boardwalk was great. We saw the first of the several rainbows we saw throughout the trip. Rented a surrey bike for a half hour, pedaled two laps around the lake (that was enough, as DS and DH were apparantly entered into an imaginary race
). We then boarded a friendship boat to the Beach Club for dinner at Beaches and Cream. They were able to seat us at the counter right away (about 7:45). The place had a sort of frantic feeling, very busy and crowded. Service was great, food was terrific. Of course everyone HAD to have dessert, but DS was the only one to finish dessert! When walking past the BC pool, I got the first twinge of "I wish we were staying here". Boat back to boardwalk, waddled back to car, dropped kids at condo, then ran to Publix to get stuff to stock the fridge for most of our breakfasts.
