We were very fortunate on our first trip that we just returned from Apr 10-17. We were at MK Monday, BB Tuesday, AK Wednesday (6 hours) and then MK until about 10:30 PM (EMH), Epcot Thursday, DS-MGM Friday, MK Saturday.
Everyday, no matter which park, we were able to walk on to every ride we wanted to do. All week we waited no longer than 20 minutes and used FP religiously. It amazed me to see people waiting in hour long lineups while we were there because you did not have to at all. A little planning and a bit of walking and you can easily accomplish all the attractions without standing in lines all day.
As an example, on Saturday at MK (against all popular wisdom I know, except UG's site) we did BTMR 3 times in 25 minutes, Splash twice right after, Ariel and the Princesses in Toontown for my DD6 (and me), all between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM (most of that waiting for the autographs). By this time, being our 3rd day at MK, we knew what we wanted to do, so it was easier.
My advice to anybody just learning or going for the first time is to 1) get lucky with the timing of your visit, 2) listen to the advice on these boards and 3) use the FP - we were never in line without at least 1 FP and sometimes we had up to 3 (never a problem using them past the time).
One last note - you will be amazed at what you and your kids can do. I am not a big thrill ride person, but we did every ride multiple times on our stay, and my DD6 was the most daring of the group (she is mad that she wasn't tall enough for RnR).
Have fun!
