Hello Disneyland experts

I am a seasoned WDW vet but know zero about Disneyland other than it has been on my bucket list for years. Someday I will visit California and spend three days exploring the two parks - maybe on an adventure by disney trip. That trip is not happening any time soon though. My family and I are however going to be staying at a beach house on dana point the week of March 12. I know it is not an ideal location to take a day trip to disney from but my son has committed to getting up super early and driving with me to disneyland for rope drop. K figure we will choose a non-weekend day (any advice on picking the day would be helpful as well) With the reservation system I am not sure how all of that works. Do I need to buy single day passes first and then the reservation system will let me look or can I look somehow first? I assume that I have to pick a park or can I get a single day hopper pass and just go hard from open to close and try to see the best of both parks? I realize this is not the optimal way to see the parks but it is better than not seeing them right? Can I sign up for genie plus in advance or is that an at the park thing? Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.

For the first few years, I was with friends, staying in a hotel in LA and we did one day trips to Disneyland. I agree, when you have never been and really want to go, and all you can do is a one day, open to close, then yes it is worth it.

Many posters here on Disboards have grown up being able to go to the parks, and will say that you need more than 1 day and you need to stay local. But that just is not possible for everyone.

I posted this in another thread, some things to consider as a first timer

Everything will be sensory overload, so just take your time and don't try to go from ride to ride. So many things will catch your eyes, all the different sounds, even the scents and smells, will catch your attention.

I was woefully wrongly dressed for my first visit. I had no idea about the miles and miles of walking. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes and really downsize your handbags / park bags. First timers think they need so much stuff but hauling a heavy bag with stuff thats never used / needed will wear you out faster. Also a backpack is easier than an over the shoulder / cross body bag. The strap on cross body bag can irritate the neck on someone who is not used to walking big distances in heat. And bring a cloth bag for merchandise shopping, again for a first timer not used to all the walking in the heat, plastic merchandise bags are hard to manage and bang off legs and will add to your discomfort as the goes by.

I wouldnt even try to book restaurants or have a plan for the day. On my first visit after every ride, my friends would ask, what did I want to do next, I had no idea, so we just ended up doing the rides they usually do. My friends didnt understand that I knew nothing about the rides and attractions, they just assumed that I knew the parks like they did. I only knew about things like the Castle and Fantasyland and Main Street as thats all thats usually show on TV about Disney parks. Take the time to know about the rides and themes before you go, look at the differences between rides like Haunted Mansion and rides in Fantasyland and the coaster like rides like Indiana Jones and Big Thunder Mountain and the simulator rides like Star Tours. My friends wanted to hit all the their favourite rides, where as I just wanted to explore.

The same with food. They always had lunch in The Plaza, so thats where we ate. It wasn't until I started going solo that I discovered all the other restaurants and food options. Have a look at Disneyland website, all the restaurants and food options are there, with all the menus, so you can budget and pick food options which are best for you, not just the ones everyone talks about online.

I found on my visit 2 weeks ago, that snacking throughout the day, was really fun, and gave me more flexibility in the park than planning sit down table service. When I first visited with my California friends their food budget was low, as they visit multiple times in a year so we ate at the cheaper places. Whereas with me, I visit once a year and have a higher food budget.

The same with shopping. My California friends didnt give much time to browsing the shops throughout the park during the day, as it took up time that could be spent on rides. Whereas with me, especially in the first few years when I wasnt sure if I would return the next year, spending time in the shops throughout the day is just as important as rides.

The same with nighttime shows. We staked out a spot right in front of The Castle for the fireworks, as thats what friends grew up doing with their families. When I started going solo I skipped the fireworks and went on rides and discovered Fantasmic and World of Color.

My first visit with my California friends was park hopper, as thats what they always did, but I would have preferred a slower pace in one park. Talk to your family, maybe just being in Disneyland Main Park is enough for a first 1 day visit. I found park hopping on a one day put too much pressure to do and see it all.

When you do open to close, having some chill time / down time in the afternoon is important. Your mind wants to keep going but your feel and body just wont, so recharging, ready for the second part of the day is important.
I usually take a break from rides between 2pm and 5pm and find a chill out spot to sit and people watch and then stay until close.

Talk about characters. Meeting characters is not high priority for me, as I didn't grow up going to the parks and dont have nostalgia or an emotional connection but my California friends did and meeting characters was a must do for them. With just one day, you need to figure out before hand whether you want to stop and do the new character interactions or just take a photo in passing and keep going to the next thing.

Finally photopass. It wasnt until Covid and I spent time looking through my photos of previous visits that I realised I had no photos of me in the parks. I used Photopass for the first time on my recent visit and having good photos of me in the parks is something I love and will do again on my next visit.

Thanks for all of that! Great advice. I actually have $4000 (crazy right?) in Disney reward dollars so this trip is effectively free. Because of covid we havent been taking our annual WDW trip so they just accumulated. I plan on paying for genie plus and any extra lightening lane stuff so we can minimize our wait. Do you know if you can upgrade from a one day pass to a two day pass while you are on site? I mean if we are having an amazing time, I could see us adding a day and coming back in a day or two for a second day to do the things we missed. Does anyone know if that is even an option???

Disneyland uses its own App and not the MDE. Start by having it. Tickets and Reservations are similar to WDW. Purchase ticket and make the reservation. With a Hopper you will choose the starting park. When chosen they use words like “all day”. That will be your rope drop park. Then at 1pm, you can start the hopping. Genie+ can be purchased with the ticket or wait until in the park to decide. Look at the operating hours for the day. I’d avoid any special event day. Nowadays most days are busy but a Wednesday or Thursday would be my choice. The parking will open one hour prior to the rope drop park start. The park gates usually open half hour prior to that. Enjoy your trip!

You can upgrade your tickets in the app before you leave the park, but keep in mind March will be busy spring break period and you it is possible you might have difficulty getting a reservation last minute. Also depending on the day of the week, two separate day tickets can sometimes be cheaper than the two-day pass (although if you are adding park hopper twice, then that's probably not the case.

I think a one day trip is totally doable if you have the stamina to go open to close and prioritize what you want to do. I'd get the park hopper and focus on some of the unique rides in each park.

You can sign up for Genie+ in advance. I would definitely do that and read some of the threads here about how to make the most of it. Have a blast!!

Thanks everyone! I will start reading all of your genie plus wisdom. Super excited to finally see these parks. They are walking distance from each other, right? Parking the same place for both of them?

Both park gates are steps apart with Downtown Disney right there as well. One parking spot for it all. Trams scheduled to be running again for the Mickey & Friends/Pixar parking structure too.

They are definitely walking distance from each other! When you exit Disneyland, you walk straight across the hub to the entrance to DCA. It’s a 1-2 minute walk.

I’m glad you are planning a 3-Day trip in the future, but I’m also glad you can slip in a 1-Day park visit sooner! I think you’ll have a wonderful time! I grew up about 90 minutes away from Disneyland and my family would usually visit once or twice a year. We always went for just one day from open until close and while I was always jealous of those people staying at the Disneyland Hotel back then, I have so many wonderful memories of those day trips to the park! Will you be able to see and do everything? No, but that’s part of the magic and will just help you plan what you want to do on future trips. I now live in Northern California and when we go with our own kids, we usually go for 3-5 days, but we still go for 1-day trips now and then if we are visiting family in Southern California.

Good to hear on the trams running again. I have been researching parking and it looks like parking doesn’t open until 8 or 830 — how can that be? I don’t care how much the parking costs because I will pay for it with rewards dollars so what is my best and earliest parking option for the day?

Also — because we can upgrade our tickets in the park, I am going to take the earlier advice and go on a Wednesday and then if we are having a great time and want to add a day, will do so and add that Friday (to give us a down day in between). Is parki hopping also something that can be added at the park? I guess I could buy just passes to Disney land and just plan to do the one park and add the park hopper if we change our minds.

I can’t see how you wouldn’t have a great time. I’d buy a 2 day ticket now. To upgrade or add a parkhopper you have to wait at the ticket booth. That will waste precious time on a 1-2 day trip.
