We were there 11/30-12/7. First of all, we had a magical time. It was me, DH, and DD6 and DD3 (just turning 3 while we were there.) I'm going to post some honest opinions about some things, and I hope I don't come across as complaining, because none of these "ruined" our trip. Just some observations.

First, I will say that for us, Disney ended up being more about the shows, fireworks, and parades than the attractions (rides). BTMRR, Splash, Space Mountain were fun and everything, but really it was the shows that made it "Disney." Don't get me wrong, Soarin, for example is out of this world, and the Haunted Mansion was really unique. But it wasn't about the rides.

The character meals always felt rushed to us. Granted, I realize they have a lot of people to get to, so I'm not really upset or anything. But it was obviously rushed. Each one was like "here I am , take a pic quick and toss me the autograph book." Okay, they didn't say that, but it was pretty obvious they wanted in and out. I guess I thought maybe they would interact a bit with the kids, but there was really none of that. At least I will be prepared for that if I can talk my DH into a "next time."

There were a ton of people each day in the parks, but fo rsome reason, we didn't wait much for anything. We did utilize fastpass, but the standbys weren't even bad - (~20 min usually). I think Disney does a great job of handling crowds.

I really wanted my kids to love Epcot, but they didn't. I think in a few years they might. I also know that we didn't see a lot of what Epcot has to offer. We did the big ones (TT, Soarin, Nemo, Turtle Talk, Maelstrom, Mexico Boat ride, and DH did Mission Space.) DD6 and I went back for Illuminations. I would have loved to have seen more countries, but we didn't have time.

The rain on 12/4 messed with our plans. What happened was that we were in DHS that day and it POURED all.day.long. We were supposed to see F! and the Osborne lights that night. Well, we went back to the resort instead. Since we didn't see the Osborne lights that night, we went back to DHS the next day instead of going to AK as planned. Yes, I wanted to see the Osborne lights that bad...that I gave up our AK to see them. Plus my DD's had wanted to see the Beauty and the Beast show, which was also cancelled the previous day due to the rain. In hindsight, we probably should have gone to AK the day it poured, since the two big shows are indoors, but we thought AK would not be a good park in the rain. I guess there is always next time to see the Lion King show. I don't regret going back to see the Osborne lights though. Definitely worth it.

Rain messed with our plans part II: Due to the rain on Thursday and Friday last week, the taping got moved to Sunday, which was DD3's birthday. We had breakfast in the castle, and had planned to enjoy her birthday by doing her favorite attractions in the park. It was sooo PACKED that we couldn't move, and by 1:30 we had enough. I purposely tried soooo hard to plan around the taping, and in the end, it didn't matter. I'm a little bitter about that, but what can you do?

MVMCP: Not sure it was worth the money for us. We saw the parade, and Holiday Wishes. Then my DD3 fell asleep. We left by 10:00. Very epensive hot chocolate and cookies! But the hot chocolate was yummy.

Transportation took way longer than I envisioned. For example, it took one full hour to get from the Wilderness Lodge to the Polynesian, after transerrring from boat to monorail at MK. One hour! I guess that was surprising to me. I learned that anytime you have to transer, it takes a long time.

Anyway, as I said, the trip was wonderful. Nothing we could have done about the two things that messed us up: Rain and taping. I'm not sure if I would choose this week again, though.

Those are just my thoughts - but again, there were so many high points to our trip. I'd do it all again!

These cold fronts and their rain can really mess up the best laid plans, can't they? Like you said, what can you do? And you're right about Disney transportation; it can take a lot longer to get from here to there than you'd expect.

It sounds like you made the best of things, though. Thanks for the honest report.

:)

The 12/4 rain messed up DHS for us too. We still went to watch Fantasmic, only too have it canceled 5 minutes before showtime. So we rode ToT with our fastpasses then headed over to see the lights, only to find out they had been shut down due to some issue caused by the rain. It was day 2 at Studios for us and those were really the only things we had left to do. Guess we may need to go back again sometime, what a shame.

I love someone with a positive outlook: planning the next trip!!!:lmao: Unfortunately weather is what it is, and flexibility is a must. We find the AK to be a great park to "do" in the rain - on the Safari the animals really come out. Of course, that may have to do with the fact that we're dyed in the wool August visitors. I'm glad you had a good time and were able to pretty much roll with the punches. There's always a glitch or two in any vacation in the World and it's best to have good back-up plans. Normally we go from Plan A to Plan BBB in the matter of a few hours depending on crowds, weather, and how long it takes to get food. Post some pictures!!

Thanks for your honest opinions. We are headed there next Saturday, I hope our trip will be as magical as I anticipate!!!

Glad you didn't let rain dampen your fun. Hope there's a next time soon for you guys. :goodvibes

Sorry that it wasn't as magical as you hoped. Seems to me that you made the same mistake that most first-timers make... too much time at the Magic Kingdom, and not enough time exploring the other parks.

It's a shame you missed the AK, and that you didn't get to tour all of World Showcase at Epcot. If you do go back, I recommend that you try to spend more time in the other parks. There is SO MUCH more to Disney World than the Magic Kingdom!

I guess there is always next time to see the Lion King show.
That's the right attitude. The Osborne Lights are seasonal; by seeing them this trip you have much more leeway in planning your next trip.

The rain on 12/4 messed us up too. We ended not being able to see either Fantasmic or the Osborne Lights. I wasn't too upset about Fantasmic as we've seen it before (multiple times), but I really wanted to see the Osborne Lights. My niece was also disappointed that the High School Musical show was cancelled (she's 11 and loves High School Musical). Luckily, she's old enough to understand that performing in the rain can be dangerous to the performers, but she was really looking forward to seeing it.

I traveled with a first timer the same week; and what seemed to me as seamless transportation - just take the bus from DTD over to POR and then take the water taxi back to SSR - or take the ferry to from MK to WL and then the bus back to DTD and then back to SSR - seemed convuluted to her, but absolutely wonderful to me. Love, love, love the water taxis, ferries, etc. She complained several times as to why you couldn't go from resort to resort to resort directly. If they did, could you imagine how many buses you would have to run to do that????

The transfer station at DTD, which was right next door to SSR, seemed so right to me, but so wrong to her.......

Glad you had a magical time, and I did not think any of your points sound like "complaining"! We were there for the same as the end of your visit - 12/3-12/7

First, I will say that for us, Disney ended up being more about the shows, fireworks, and parades than the attractions (rides). Don't get me wrong, Soarin, for example is out of this world, and the Haunted Mansion was really unique. But it wasn't about the rides.

We always feel the exact same way. You can get "rides" at any amusement park. But it's only Disney who has the total package of atmosphere, shows, nighttime spectaculars, street performers, etc. Even the queue and preshow areas are treasure troves of little details that no other place has.

This is why we get park hoppers - it seems that even the best laid plans can be thwarted by weather, crowds, maintenance issues, or other reasons. PH's give us flexibility, and we definitely used them this trip. We did go to AK on Friday in the rain, and had a blast. We rode EE first thing three times with no wait, then the safari where we saw LOTS of animals out. We LOVE the Lion King show and also saw the Nemo show for the first time - SO creative and fun!

We had already planned to go to DHS that night for Osborne lights and Fantasmic (thanks to PH's), and we went anyway even in the rain. Well, they did not even turn OL on that night (something about the effects and the rain), and the first F! was apparently a shortened version, with just the fireworks. So we just rode rides and decided to try the second F!, just in case they decided to show it anyway, although we did not have our hopes up. Here's the crowd in the middle section 15 minutes before show time:

Well, the show DID go on, for probably about 1500 people total (out of the 7000 capacity!). It was GREAT!

We also went back to DHS the next night to see the OL, and they were amazing.

We had a CP lunch at 11:45 on Sunday, so we ran into some of the same issues. We arrived at rope drop, and with the craziness on Main Street, we decided to take the train to the back of the park. It was a great decision, we rode Big Thunder three times with no wait, then a couple rides in FL and TL with very few crowds. We were recruited to participate in the parade taping, but we were having too much fun to take them up on it. On our way to lunch at CP, the Jonas Brothers were doing their performances on the hub, so we watched a little of that:

We did leave the park for most of the afternoon, because we knew once the parade taping folks were "released" those short lines we had all morning would disappear. We did see Kelly Ripa taping the parade announcing as we left:

We came back later for the castle lighting and MVMCP and had a blast. We were lucky enough to get a sizable military discount on the tickets, and I am not sure we would have gone for full price. Fun but $$$.

We had a wonderful time in spite of the weather and bigger crowds than anticipated - bottom line was we were at Disney World!

You should have stayed for the second Fantasmic - the show went on (see my post above). We had a blast!

i really enjoyed reading a first timers comments.
i agree that the transportation can take a long time to get from point a to point b. and the hardest is to get to one hotel from another when they are not a part of the monorail line! like for example, my trip from all star music to the boardwalk was easily an hour and i transferred buses at DTD.

I love you review because I appreciate the fact that stuff went wrong with your plans, but you didn't let it ruin your trip! That is a wonderful attitude.

Great post, and very well stated.

On the trip from WL to POLY (and I'm not expert on that area transportation as I know during some hours boats run one way but not the other or something) can you take a boat from WL to CR? Or does it have to go from WL > FW > CR? I think you can also take a bus from WL to MK then hop the monorail? It's more about the timing on transportation.

And to another poster, anytime you involve a park and DTD it's going to be a pain since they dont do direct park to DTD.

On the character meals, they do tend to 'nudge' you towards the exit as they can, but if you wanted more time to eat, you sure could, but yea the characters themselves keep moving.

And rain really can put a 'damper' on your days, especially when it's a soaker that doesnt just show up and then leave like you get a lot of times there.

Still sounds like fun!

Oh, the rides, a lot of times, the ride itself isnt as neat as the pre ride stuff, but if you have fairly short lines you miss a lot of that stuff..

I thought your observations were very helpful for other first-timers! Sorry you had a couple glitches, but I'm glad you are thinking of a return trip!

I know what you mean about the kids and EPCOT. We enjoy the rides in Future World, but it really took us until our 3rd trip a few weeks ago to really, really enjoy the World Showcase. It's just such a different touring experience. Keep going back, and I bet you'll find your vibe there!

Glad you had such a great trip, and thanks for the thoughts!

The 12/4 rain certainly was surprising! It's never rained on us that much at WDW before, going back more than 20 years. But it had to happen sometime!

Transportation CAN be a bear going from one resort to another. This is usually the time that I'm wishing I had a car (but can't justify the expense for that one purpose). Glad you had a good time!

Good observations. I totally agree with you on disney being about the shows, not the rides. I todl my DH before his first trip a few years ago (I had been many times already) NOT to go to WDW expecting huge thrill rides like at 6 Flags ro something. I told him it is more of a place to relaz, enjoy the ambience, the theming and the "feel" of it all. The parades and shows are a big part ofthat. I also like how every ride is a story...the queue and the ride itself work together, not like at 6 Flags where you wait in a generaic line and then ride a 2 minute ride and move on with life. Anyone looking for simple thrill rides like that should go to UNiversal while in Orlando. Also a good park, but TOTALLY different!

Sorry about the rain... It has happened to me, too!

Our kids felt the same way about Epcot. They love Test Track, but the rest was so-so to them until we started visiting the Innovention Pavillions. Now they love Epcot and we probably go there more than any other park each trip. They older they get the more they appreciate World Showcase. It was so fun this last trip to just take my oldest to the WS and see him be in awe of all the details.
So it will come. You just have to plan a trip when they are older. Not a bad problem to have!

Great review! Thanks for letting us know the good and the not so good. So many people idealize their trip. No trip is perfect, but they're all good! Just one quick tip about the boat/monorail thing for your "next" trip! It seems to be a little quicker, and just as nice, if you take the boat to the Contemporary then the monorail to the Polynesian instead of going to MK first. I think the more times you can avoid MK, the better. It's just that there's less people at the Contemporary than there are at MK, so easier to get on and off the monorail there. Glad to see you still had a good time!
