First Timer Booking?

I have a question regarding booking using DVC points and I am brand new to this. . .(just joined and haven't even received official information yet.) When you make a "points" reservation do you need to have the point necessary available at the time of booking or by the date of the reservation? Or do I have to borrow the points I will need before October to do this?

For example. . .if I currently have 160 points but want to book (September 2010) 11 months out (October 2009) for a trip that I will need 270 points for that I won't have until February can I still book in October or do I need to wait until February when the use year starts?

You need to have the points available as of the reservation date, not the date you book. So, yes, you would be able to book the reservation on your example in October

Thanks for the quick response. . .something tells me I am going to have a lot more questions before I get this first DVC vacation behind me!

I am a fairly new member, but when I am trying to figure out my trips, the first thing I do is figure out what UY I will be traveling in. Once I know that, I know that I can pay for it using banked points from the previous UY, current UY points, and points borrowed from the next UY.

Then I look to see what I need for the trip and go from there. In your case, you have a Feb UY, so your Oct 2010 trip falls in your Feb 2010 UY. For that trip, you can use banked 2009 points, 2010 points, and borrowed 2011 points.

When you call MS in November, they will look at your account and take the points you need to complete the reservation. When using banked points, just be sure to remind MS that you want to use those first (they should do it automatically, but it never hurts to remind them during the phone call)!

this is an important point to know:

Remember, use year has nothing to do with when you may call to make a reservation. All of your points are actually "in your account". You don't have to wait until your use year begins to have access to your points - you just have to match your vacation dates to the use year it falls within, and then make sure you have enough points in that use year to make the desired reservation.
