We are a family of 2 adults and 16 and 13 year old boys planning on spending our first three nights at HRH. We will arrive about 4pm probably not too active due to the long flight and time difference! So my question is will 2 full days and most of a 3rd day before moving on to WDW be enough at US? Not done much homework on the parks yet so I'm probably being lazy asking this question!

Pending on when you're going, park hours, and if you have US' equivilent to a Park Hopper... (Forgot what they're called. -__-)...You should be more than alright. Definitly leaves time to go back to IOA and go back to your favorite rides.

Should be fine, but speaking from my experience, i would do Universal and stay at HRH after Disney,i.e your last 3 days.

Any reason why? I did look at this option as it makes the holiday slightly cheaper but I think I may not want to leave Disney to go to Universal once there so am doing it this way around. Not booked yet so open to ideas.

The simple reason for doing HRH at the end of your disney holiday is FOTL, the express access that your room key affords you spoils you and you will hate queuing at WDW after your Universal visit, also depending on your WDW resort the HRH will be more superior in standard to any WDW moderate or value resort, another tip is join the Loews loyalty program for some freebies during HRH stay, join Here

We will be staying de luxe at WDW (AKL) and I'm not sure if we could get any discount joining a loyalty scheme as we will be booking through Virgin using Tesco clubcard vouchers for this holiday but will look into it for future holidays. I'm not sure about the queuing argument though as if they are too long we leave it. It will be only our second visit but we plan on taking in the detail more than actually riding the rides IYKWIM. After reading someones report on the USA trip report they enjoyed taking a lot of relaxing days looking around and exploring the other resorts, that's something we may think about doing as I expect the parks to be very crowded. So plan on going early mornings and late evenings.

The loyalty program is worth joining as its not discounts on offer, but upgrades, and gifts, we have went via Virgin, FC, TC, and always get the Loews benefits, as for the queuing its not an argument with FOTL its just a great benefit for onsite guest's,

like Highlander447 says , the FOTL will spoil you, and you will be there in July August so there will be big queues at Disney and Universal, although you will not have any probs at Universal with FOTL.
and like highlander447 said its not discounts but benefits. this year i get a free suite upgrade for the price of a standard room, which is not bad.

OK thanks to your advice I've joined the loyalty scheme. I thought it would just offer some benefits when booking direct with them not through a travel company. I was going to book club level now I don't know whether to leave it till we get there, I'm one of those people who want it booked so I know I've got it but a freebie would be nice. I knew about FOTL passes, it was one of the things that made me look at US hotel compared to staying at Disney and travelling over to US and buying the fastpass tickets.

Our first stay at RPR was through Virgin , and although it was not supposed to count as a stay , they did count it and we got our Gold card, and on arrival with it i upgraded to a suite for $30 a night, got my Platinum card for this year and got my suite upgrade for free. Upgrades to Club level are apparently very rare so would not expect one.
buying the fast pass tickets [which i am sure you know]only entitles you to 1 fast pass ride on each attraction, whereas staying onsite you can do it as many times as you like, so much better value
