first time visiting

First of all let me say hello to everyone here.We are planning to visit in August 2008.But was told thats a bad time(weather) is this true.I was looking at the 17th and staying 7 or 10 days.

Hi! We went in August 2 years ago and are going again this August. I thought the weather was fine. I'm from upstate NY and the heat was comparable to our summers here on a hot day. We found that we were on rides, in air-conditioned buildings, etc. so much of the time, that only a very few times did we really feel the heat. We did have those portable fans and drank lots of water. We also each wore hats. Have a fun trip!

We went in Aug 07. One day we were at the main pool at CBR about 1 in the afternoon and I took a look at the thermometer that was in the shade. 100 degrees. We live in NorthWest PA and I had never felt any thing like this heat. It was however very enjoyable. You just need to plan for it. Light weight lite color clothes, sandles, sun screen and a LOT of water. We filled up our bottles before we left in the morning and then again after nap time. ENJOY

We're going in mid August. It's going to be hot-- you know, the whole Florida in Summer thing.

But the only times I've ever gone have been summer-- it's not the end of the world. We're planning on lots of pool time in afternoons, and park time in mornings and evenings.

We went Aug 07 and we're returning Aug 08! We found that it was hot and humid, but as a PP mentioned, there are opportunities to cool off, so take advantage of them. We were lucky to have no rain last year too! Very uncommon!
We bought a water mister fan at the parks (we brought 2 from home but they were cheap and both broke in a day) This does help keep you cool!
We also go to whatever park has early EMH to beat the mid day heat and lines. You can get so much done in that first hour!
Any restaurant will give you free ice water (the size of a medium soda, even if you aren't buying anything else, counter service too) so we bring along drink mix ins to help it taste good. Also, get a dole hwip in MK...beats the heat anytime! Have fun planning!

Thanks to all for the reply's but it's not really the heat(live in VA and it gets hot here in summer) were worried about is the rain.We were told Aug/Sept are the rainy times.Guess we will just chance it after all "IT"S DISNEY" right how much of a bad time could it be.Also is it really worth getting the meal package add-on.The wife and I are really debating this.Hope I'm not worrying you folks to much with all the "?" but I'm just as pumped up about the trip as my kid's are.My parent's always wanted to take my sister and myself but never could afford it but done what they could.Now Mom and Dad are in there late 50's and retired so now it's my turn to step to the plate.So I'm bringing Mom/Dad/ Sister and her two son's

I have been 2 times in August...I had no rain the 2nd trip and I don't recall a big problem the 1st Aug. trip (iT's been 10 years). It is common to have a quick shower almost daily at Disney, but they can come as quick as they go. I have ponchos from our honeymoon that I pack each trip and they must be good luck charms....no rain our last 2 visits!

The last time we went to the World was August of 2003. It was very hot, and humid. It rained everyday mostly in the afternoon for about an hour. The crowds, were not that bad actually. The longest I had to wait for a ride was the TOT for about 45 minutes.

My suggestion for Disney in August? Opt for 10 days instead of 7 so you can tour at a leisurely pace AND spend some time at the resort in the afternoons just relaxing. Yes, it will be very hot (more than likely) but the crowds should start to thin out a bit by this time (kids are starting to head back to school). Also, there is the thread of hurricanes, so the discounts should begin to kick in too.

We have been going in August for the last few years..It is HOT and it does rain most days..sometimes for 3 minutes and sometimes for a couple of hours..sometimes its just a light rain, and sometimes its a downpour. Bring ponchos and dont worry about it. Get up and go early, get to the parks at opening and then head back for a break in the afternoon. (most of the time it rains mid day) Its funny though, sometimes its so hot that people dont even bother putting on the ponchos..lol My girls like to get wet then run into the store to get "really COLD"..lol ( they screech it everytime).
Honestly the low crowds at the end of the month are worth the risk of the rain....

Ahh! I started writing this and then my dog hit the button! I apologize if this is a duplicate! Just a suggestion for you that I received from these boards. Buy those 2 for $1 ponchos from the dollar store. They are small and light and fit anywhere like a fanny pack, purse, bag, etc. If it rains, you pull one out to use and throw it out when the rain passes. They are also good on rides like Kali River Rapids if you don't want to get wet. They rip easily to go over strollers if needed and can be put on the ground, etc. after a rain storm to keep you from getting wet on the bottom for parades. I bought 2-3 per person in my family and returned with many of them. I think we used them twice, once for rain and once for a ride.
As for the dining plan, I SOOO LOVE it!!! It's such an individual choice kind of thing though. Price out what it would cost you and then what you would spend without it and compare.
The planning is half the fun!
