First time trip to the Fort

My wife and I are in the planning stages of our first trip to the Fort. While we have been to Disney many times before, this will be our first trip to the Fort. We are looking at a 10 day trip in a preferred site towards the middle to end of July. I know it will be hot but unfortunately summer is the only feasible option for us as she is a teacher. We'll just make sure the campers A/C is tuned up and working before we go. We will be traveling with our 3 kids 7, 5, and 2 (his bday will be during the trip) and I think the kids are almost as excited as we are.

What advice can the experienced Fort folks give us to get the most out of the trip?

We've only been to the Fort once.....just this past Nov/Dec. You will LOVE it! Our friends that we traveled with had been there twice before and were always talking about what a great place it was to camp. Found it a little hard to believe that it was as good as they said it was, but they were absolutely correct. Sites were level and very clean and surprisingly well laid out. My DH generally has issues backing our 32 foot 5th wheel into spots (surprising since he does everything else so well concerning the camper), but actually had little trouble this time. His only complaint was that the roads could have been a little wider......at least for our loop. Other loops may have been better. Bus service was good and we seldom had to wait very long for one. We really enjoyed our stay. Now we need to go back sometime and just spend some time enjoying the campground itself. This trip the camper was more like a hotel room than actually enjoying the camping experience.

"DITTO" to what Disney Bunny said. Since you will be there in the "warm season" plan on taking advantage of the night time "Extra Magic" hours. They add hours that last until 1:00am so you can go back to FW in the heat of the day and return in the evening. Take in the campfire sing-a-long and movie with Chip-n-Dale as well. You can bring your own marshmallows/wieners and forks or you can buy a s'more kit and sticks there (a little overpriced however).

Bottom line the Fort is an adventure in itself. ENJOY!!

I would suggest that you remember to leave some time open to enjoy the Fort itself (not just the parks). Bike riding, kayaking, carriage rides, etc. are just a few things that are available, oh yea and there are the fireworks, the boat parade, horse back riding, boat rentals, and the hula-hoop contest at the pool..well you get the idea.

Pick a date and make your reservations ASAP... the Fort is a very busy place and the longer you wait the less likely you are to get your preferred site tier, or a site at all for that matter. Especially if you prefer a Preferred site since there are fewer Preferred sites than any other tier.

Second recommendation, if you can't afford a cart, pack your bikes. The Fort is a great place to explore, but it is also huge. Bikes make it a lot 'smaller'.
