We'll be visiting from Oregon in 01/2008. My daughter and I would love to dip our toe in the Atlantic Ocean. How far from WDW to the beach and would it be best to just rent a car for the day? I'm guessing a taxi would be pretty spendy? Thanks!

DBF and I drove from WDW to Daytona Beach when we checked out last year. It was about 2 hours (give or take) from WDW. It was very cool though, because they even allowed you to drive on the beach (for $5)!

Cocoa Beach is closer than Daytona, and less crowded. It takes about an hour to 1 & 1/2 hours to drive there, but I would guess the cab fee would be outlandish. I would rent a car.

I also would recommend Cocoa Beach over Daytona. Much quieter and less busy. We did like Daytona and it is cool to drive on the beach, but we'll only go back to Cocoa.

ditto on the cocoa beach thing, Daytona's biggest attraction is that you can drive on to the beach, which is cool and might work for you, and would be just fine for dipping the toes.
but cocoa is a real nice beach. views of the cape (launch sites) and
plenty of pelicans, dolphins and other seacoast life. nice.

i wonder if you could take one of those disney express buses
we watched the disney ships go right by us this year as we sat on cocoa beach.

i am a huge beach person, but you could never get me to leave disney for anything. But if i was from the middle of the country i might consider what your saying. be careful of when you go to daytona beach
if its a racing week or spring break that beach can get crazy crowded.
just something else to consider.

edit, just reread your post, and saw you are talking january, BRRRRR
i dont mind cold water and have been in daytona water in february, but january is cold, toesees might be frozen when you pull em back. but you should be safe from racing activity, (just testing then)

Cocoa can also get crowded during spring break. I love cocoa beach! It took us a little less than an hour to get there. Have fun.:cool1:

We just did this in Aug. Rented a car from Alamo , right on Disney property. They have a shuttle to pick you up, get car, go to beach, return car, shuttle takes you back to hotel. Very easy. Cocoa beach was about 1 hr, 15 min. Go to "I dream of JEannie drive" to a very nice beach, good parking. Then you can walk both ways for quite a stretch. Take the beeline to Cocoa and come back that way. SOmeone suggested we go back to Disney by driving south toward Melbourne and then taking 192 back. Could not see any of the coast because of buildings and 192 takes you through Kissimmee and past TONS of hotel, restaurants, very crowded and busy.
