Well, for people who have never been to Europe, I generally don't suggest that they visit DLRP unless they have a lot of time. There are a lot of things to see in the world, and while I enjoy Disney, it is only a small part of what is out there.
Now my thoughts on Versailles.... As a small child we were dragged to castles on the weekend. Bavaria as you can imagine is filled with castles. Unfortunately this caused me to develop a dislike for castle touring. Recently however I have started to go back inside castles I know very well, and I am impressed with how the Bavarian castle system is laid out with limited entrances and guided tours.
I recently revisited Versailles on a Tuesday during low season, and was appalled. I arrived at 930am and waited 40 minutes for a ticket. Then I joined hundreds of other people and was swept along in a mass crush. There was no way to stop and look at anything. It was sweltering hot inside. People were taking photos even though they were not supposed to. Tour guides were shouting in various languages at their groups.
The only relief was walking outside in the somewhat sparse gardens (they are not as lush in late autumn as in summer)
My recent Versailles experience reinforced why I avoid the 'tourist' sites unless they are well planned. The Louvre is a similar experience; people pushing past just to say that they 'did' the Louvre. I prefer the Rodin museum or the Orsay or any of the many smaller museusm.
Sorry for the long rant!
Had you asked about visiting any other major Paris site, I would say to visit that site instead of DLRP. But since you asked about Versailles..... if you have never seen a palace, and go early on a weekday, and understand what it may be like, then you may enjoy it.
I don't see myself returning to Versailles anytime soon, unless to visit the grounds. We have the much more intimate and ordered Herrenchiemsee in Bavaria, which was modelled on Versailles.
