First Time Flyer...What's your best tip?

DD7 and I will be flying to MCO in November. I haven't flown since I was, well, about my DDs age, minus one sight seeing trip in an itty bitty plane

What are some common mistakes newbie flyers make that you can help me avoid??

What should I absolutely have in my carry on? What should I leave out?

What should I take for DD? Do I need ID for her?

Allow plenty of time to get to the airport in case of traffic tie ups.
Since you have not flown in along time make sure you get there at least 2 hours before your flight. Sometime security lines can be long especially when you return home. The security lines at Orlando are very very long.

Before you get to security remove everything from your pockets and put them in your carry on. Once you get to security you will have to remove your shoes and have them x-rayed.

You can only take liquids in your carry on that are 3oz size or less, must fit into a 1 quart ziplock bag. You must remove this ziplock bag from your carry on and allow it to be screened by security.

Pack in your carry on all medications, ID, money, park tickets.

As far as a 7 old I would take a DVD player to keep her occupied. I am not sure what ID you need for her.

Before you get to security remove everything from your pockets and put them in your carry on. Once you get to security you will have to remove your shoes and have them x-rayed.

I would like to elaborate on this. Before you even get in line for security remove all the metal objects (keys, jewelry, cell phone, etc) and place them in your carry on. Make sure your "liquid baggy" is easily accessible.

So often I see families get to the front of the security line completely unprepared. If you get prepared before you even enter the line you will be ready. All you will need to do is pop your shoes off and lay then directly on the conveyor belt, take your liquid baggy out and put it in a bin, and place your carry on on the belt. If you have a laptop it will need to be removed from its case and placed in a bin.

After your ID is checked you may put it away. However, keep your boarding pass out and in your hand as they will check it again after you pass through the metal detector.

Since shoes must be removed and placed in a bin, that means you and your dd will walk through the metal detector without shoes on. Personally, I don't go through barefooted. I take a pair of footies to use.

If you have questions, ask. People will help you out. Don't wander around the airport trying to figure out what/where/etc.

If you bring a DVD player (good tip by the way) use headphones.

Wear shoes without laces - DH is wearing loafers and I'm wearing slipon type shoes.

Men should put anything like change, keys, etc. in a baggie and in the carry-on bag - so he doesn't set off the metal detector and things are less likely to get lost.

Depending on how long your flights / layovers are a travel game or 2 are nice. I found a really nice travel Scrabble game at Barnes & Noble.
