First time camping at the Fort

I've only camped a few times in my life, and I'm sure my husband has been a few times also... But we want to camp at Fort Wilderness. We're aiming for either New Years Day(new years eve wasn't available), or early Feb.

We're excited to do this, but we don't have much camping gear... you know.. a tent for starters!
I'm sure once we camp there, we'll want to come back again and again...

so I look forward to joining all of you on here.

We did visit the Fort Wilderness area yesterday. We walked around and explored a little bit. I was curious about one thing though.. Are there year round campers? We saw several people with a lot of Christmas decorations, and they looked like they practically lived there.


Does anyone have a recommendation for a tent to buy? My husband will most likely look on Ebay or Craigslist, but I'm just wondering if anyone has a tent that they want to brag about?

welcome lauren. i am sure you will have a great time at the fort whenever you decide to go. as for the tent, it is whatever you want in one. do you want two rooms? a screen room attached? easy set up?

i would recommend at least an air mattress if not cots. you will sleep better and if it rains your chances of keeping your stuff dry greatly increases when on top of either of these. happy tent shopping. and have fun.

Welcome to the boards!!! You're gonna LOVE camping at the Fort!!!! I'm sure some tent campers will be along soon with lots of great advice!!! (the one thing I have learned from here is to make SURE your tent is waterproofed!!! )

As to your question about the huge Christmas displays, yes there are folks there for several months at a time. Usually over the fall and winter. A lot of these folks also had lavish Halloween displays.
