The package arrived yesterday, and I started shooting today. Here are three shots of flowers from our garden, and one of something interesting I saw at the fireworks tonight.

Unfortunately, despite reading all of the great advice here about taking photos of fireworks, none of mine came out well. I should have used a tripod.

As this is our first DSLR, any advice/suggestion/critique is welcome!

Welcome to the Rebel club! I really like that last shot, so unusual. Looking forward to seeing lots more in the future!

Great pictures. The balloon shot is awesome. I got my first dslr, the xti about a month ago, and I think I took the same impatiens shot first. Have fun with your new camera.

nice job and hope you enjoy it! :thumbsup2 one comment i might make is if you can crop your photos some ( the software that came with the rebel would do that, arcsoft) or shoot a little closer to make your subject fill more of the frame they might be even nicer
i too like the balloon shot alot

with great colors. I like the first shot the best, but I also quite like the balloons :thumbsup2 .

I would agree with Jann that you consider cropping some of the pics (the second and third, and maybe even the baloon shot, oriented as a portrait) to emphasize the subjects more. The impatiens shot demonstrates the "fill the frame" principle.

Thank you all for your kind words and suggestions!

I really like the balloon one, myself, and I hadn't thought of cropping it to portrait orientation. Since the best sunset colors are on the left anyway, I wouldn't be losing anything important.
