Hi Everyone. :wave:This is my first post. We are going to Disney in December!!! We are driving there from NJ for the very first time. Just the driving part. I have been to Disney twice before but that was a long time ago. My partner has been there several times since she was a kid but not recently. Any tips or suggestions anyone has on everything Disney would be greatly appreciated. We are so excited!!! Thanks.

Congrats!!

I'm going in 6 days so if there is anything super specific you want to know, I might know about it. I've been lurking on here studiously for months :goodvibes

The people on this board are knowledgeable about any single thing you might want to know!! Especially packing! :rotfl:

Welcome!! Congrats on your December trip! I drive to WDW from Connecticut so any driving questions, just ask (P.S. Virginia goes on FOREVER! ;)).

There are a bunch of great threads in the transportation board on driving from NJ (we are leaving next Saturday, the 21st from Northern NJ!). I haven't been to Disney in 12 years and am taking my DD5 for her first trip and my parents are coming with us, they have never been either, so lots of newbies. I have gotten so many great tips from the boards and can't wait to go! If I can help with any questions, I can try, but like I said, still a newbie myself :)

Welcome!

I'm new here myself, get ready to be addicted to this site.. I am already and found lots of good info already..

:santa: We are going in December as well!

I know what you mean about it being addicting. I have been a lurker on these boards for a while now. But, I decided to make it official when we decided that we were definitely going to WDW.

First of all, welcome to the Dis!

Second, when are you going in December. The Free Dining promo will be going on for a number of dates in December and it is a huge money saver. Last date to book a MYW Disney Package for free dining dates is August 14.

Here's a list of some touring tips that can be helpful to new people:

1. Make sure you have Advance Dining Reservations, as you will be going during a very busy time and the restaurants will not be taking walk-up reservations.

2. Get to the parks at opening. You really can get a lot done in the morning because so many other people sleep in.

3. Eat lunch around 11:00 or 11:30 a.m. before the fast food places get busy. Then when while everyone else is eating lunch, you will have lower crowds.

4. I buy a ton of the two for a dollar ponchos at the dollar store and keep them in the backpack. That way you can throw them a way after use and not worry about keeping up with a wet bulky poncho the rest of the day. Bring throw away ponchos to wear on Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom, if not you WILL get soaked.

5. Other things I put in the backpack each morning are Tylenol/Motrin, small first aid kit, camera with extra batteries, small hand towel, hand sanitizer, wipes and a bottle of water.

6. Most single service items under $4.00 are considered a snack credit on the dining plan.

7. At Magic Kingdom always head to Fantasyland first, if you are not doing Fantasyland on a particular day then head to Splash Mountain first, then Big Thunder Mountain; at Epcot always ride Soarin' first and get a Fastpass for later after you get off of the ride; at Disney Hollywood Studios always ride Toy Story Mania first, then head over to Rockin' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror; and at Animal Kingdom ride Expedition Everest First then head to the Safari.

8. Favorite fast food restaurants at MK are Pecos Bills and Cosmic Rays; favorite fast food at Animal Kingdom is Flame Tree Grill and Pizzafari. If you are there while it very hot, go to Pizzafari.

9. If there are two lines going into an attraction, always take the line that goes to the left.

10. My best tip would have to be USE THE FASTPASS SYSTEM - it's free! Our rule of thumb is if the wait is 25 minutes or less, we wait in line. If the wait is 30 minutes or more, use a Fastpass. It is not highly publicized, but your Fastpass does not expire until the end of the day. You can never use it before the return time stamp on the pass, but you can always use it after. We try to collect Fastpasses during the early part of the day and then use them later in the afternoon when the parks become more crowded.

Click on this link and it will give you an excellent overview of Fastpass:

If you still don't understand, just let me know your specific questions.

11. I like the Photopass. You can pre-buy it before your trip for $99.00. When you enter the parks you will see the staff photographers, they will take your pictures and give you a Photopass and you can use that for the rest of your trip. Each time you see a photographer have them take your picture and they will scan your picture. Then when you get home you can pull up the pictures, with the code they email you after purchase, and pick the photos you want on a CD. They will then mail you the CD and the copyrights to the CD and you can take them to Walmart or Walgreens or wherever and get them developed. They also have a lot of cool software that you can use to edit your photos before you have them put on the CD.

So, it seems that we have decided to perhaps try the Auto Train. This is one area that I have a difficult time confirming. The transportation. I keep flip flopping back and forth. Since I will be doing about 90% of the driving, my partner tells me it is my decision. I have been to Disney via a car a couple of times. I wasn't the driver back then but a backseat passenger. Let me tell you, it was a long, long trip. I slept most of the way, which obviously I can't do this time around.:scared1: I have also taken the train not the Auto Train but just a regular train. That wasn't a great trip either. Let's just say that we arrived about 24 hours later then scheduled. I am planning on asking in the transporation forum about the Auto Train. If anyone has taken the Auto Train, please let me know what you thought of it. Thanks.

WOW!!!!! Thank you for all your tips. They're fantastic.

We're also travelling in December and VERY excited about this. Have been to WDW 4x, but never around the holidays which make it more exciting! :yay:

I'm sorta new here and found ALOT of great information for trip planning. I'm so glad that there's PrincessTiffany and others that are fully knowledgeable of all tips & tricks.:thumbsup2 If you're using the DDP, keep in mind that ADR's are very important for TS and I found that alot of popular restaurants for December are getting pretty booked. You may want to jump on that asap.

Other than that, have a safe drive....and let's enjoy the magic of the World during the holiday season!!!:santa:

I'll be lurking 'til then...:surfweb:

Welcome!!

I've never done the auto train but have survived MANY road trips to FL from either NY or NJ, either as a kid or as an adult. Personally I don't think I'd want to do the train. I think if you can swing it with the driving, since you said you'll be doing 90% of it, I'd go for driving. You'll have a better time and tons of great memories. My DF and I moved to FL permanently earlier in the year so we did a trip from NJ to FL and back to NJ and then back to FL for good. It was very tiresome but a lot of fun. And we have so many fond memories of the trip.

I'm not saying that you won't have great experiences & memories on the train too - I'm sure you will. But I just feel the road trips are more memorable.

As for information on Disney - my advice is to read the threads but don't get panicky over them. Sometimes I think its an information overload and people start to get all anxious trying to remember all the tips & secrets they've read on here. Overall, just make sure you have fun. :goodvibes
