I love this site. Myself, wife, two boys (4 and 2) and two grandparents are going to WDW in September for a week. Staying at the Polynesian. Have been to WDW around 5 times since childhood (last in 1999) and WDL around the same last in January of 2004.

Question #1. Both of my guys are very tall for their age (46 and 40 inches respectively) Any rides they should not go on (other than those that they are obviously not allowed on). Which is the ride that people have gottten hurt or killed on? Not to be morbid, but I want to be informed

Question #2 any tips for the trip or about the Polynesian. We are scheduled for Hoop De Doo, Little Eintstens and Dinner at the Crystal with Winnie. Did not want to go to crazy with the charachter dining. We also have the Disney Dining Plan..any tips on that?

Thanks!

As to injuries, I'd say ALL of 'em if you count boarding, un-loading, rough-housing, jumping out of vehicles and just plain falling down.

To my knowledge, no one has ever been killed WHILE RIDING a WDW attraction.

First trip to WDW with family was in Sept 04 and we are planning a return trip. Husband wants to return in the fall again, but I'm not sure if the kids should miss a week of school early in the year. My boys are going into 7th and 4th grade. I was hoping that a trip in May might be a good idea, but DH is concerned that the crowds will be too large. Help, if you had take your kids out of school would you do it in Nov. or May. Thanks

Hi and welcome to the DIS! The only ride that I can think of is Mission:Space, that's the one that a few people died AFTER riding. My 6 yr. old was tall enough for it, but I don't let her ride it, I think it's too intense for young kids, but that's just my opinion. My dd has been riding everything she's been tall enough for since she was 4 yrs. old. TOT was her favorite ride when she was 4, believe it or not! I would let the kids take the lead, they'll let you know if they want to ride or not. We're headed back in Sept. as well, and my dd is dying to ride RnRC (right now she's about an inch too short, but we're measuring every day, lol), but she won't ride Splash Mtn. :confused3 She rode Space Mtn. for the first time in Dec. with her hands up the entire ride, go figure! Just follow the lead of the kids, and use your own judgement. Maybe you could ride first and see if you think it's too much for them?
Have a great time, and happy planning!

You guys are going to have so much fun. We wlll be there in Sept also with DD (3). We went when she was 2 and the only thing that really freaked her out was Snow white''s scary adventure. It was pretty frightnening. Oh, also the movie ride at MGM. It has a very scary part from the Alien movie.

You're staying at the Poly? Take me with you! Can't answer your questions, but I wanted to say :welcome: and send a little pixie dust your way for a magical trip! pixiedust:

Just wanted to welcome you to DIS! Make sure you get your LGMHPC at your local HD so other Dis'ers will see you! Regarding the Dining Plan make sure you make all your ADR's for TS meals. You can find updated menu's at Deb Will's site: www.allearsnet.com

Enjoy the boards!

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!!!

You will LOVE the Polynesian! I've added some links below to the DIS board on the Poly (lots of stuff - maybe read recent ones first!) and Tikiman's site on the Poly - FILLED with great info!

Both (TS) restaurants are great at the Poly too. Actually my FAVORITE is the Kona Cafe. A little more subdued than 'Ohana but the food is fabulous! 'Ohana will have a bit more atmosphere and some games and singing (dinner) and there is also a Character Breakfast which I am surprised to NOT see on your listing! I was not impressed with the meat (kabobs) at 'Ohana but the shrimp, wings and all other items were very good. (I certainly never left hungry from ANY restaurant!).

There is another whole thread on Dining Plan, so I will not go into that here but in Feb, we certainly got our money's worth! (Don't know if you got your DP free but even if not - cost was very very reasonable!)

Captain Cook, the counter service has changed and is in temporary quarters for now so I may need YOU to tell me about it since I will go again in November!

I could go on and on. Loved the convenience of the monorail ... coffee at Poly is BEST (good - not Nescafe!) and the surroundings were wonderful! Of course I  the whole atmosphere of WDW! Have a GREAT TIME!

Wow thanks everyone for the replies. A little more than a week 9/5 to 9/12 is when we are going.

Can someone tell me if there is a dictionary that explains all of the Acronyms used here? Like, what is a LGMHPC???

Welcome, welcome! You will find the DIS unbelievably helpful and very addicting if I say so myself :teeth: Lucky you to stay at the Poly. It is my dream. Sounds like you are off to a good start!

About rides, just watch for the signs and quantity thereof. If they are warning about all sorts of health risk factors, and there are several warnings, you might want to consider an adult in your party trying it out first. Most people who have experienced injury or death have had previous conditions, some undiagnosed. Most healthy people can ride without incident. Just read the warning signs and do what you feel is right for your kids.

Keep in mind that even though your kids might match the height restrictions, the intensity level might be scary for them. Dinosaur is very intense, for instance. Some young ones find Haunted Mansion terrifying, although the motion of the ride is not intense. Birnbaums has a great Disney for Kids book that lets you what other kids thought about the rides, along with details like if it is dark, scary, loud, etc.. You can find the book at your bookstore.

Have a great time! :goodvibes

Welcome to the DIS, jlsiiesq.

This might help a bit with the acronyms.

The Poly was the resort for our family's trip back in '99, a wonderful resort. Make sure to walk around the resort at dusk as the tiki lights are lit, really nice. And relax on the beach a bit, take in the view. :thumbsup2

Enjoy.

Welcome to the DIS! We're so glad you found us. :)

In response to your question about rides people have been ' hurt or killed' on, you may be thinking of rides connected to deaths the media has reported. Mission: Space has been in the news a few times due to deaths and illness, but just to put it into context for you, one death was a person who had several known serious illnesses, the other was a child who had an undiagnosed congenital problem (horribly sad. I think that one sticks in everyone's mind :( ). Mission: Space now has a non-centrofuge 'Green Card' side that removes the intensity and makes it more like a simulator ride.

There have been deaths or serious problems on other attractions: an elderly woman died on Pirates, but her family knew she was in her last days and Disney was her last 'hurrah'. They thought it a blessing she died in her favorite place. The other relatively recent illness was a teenaged girl on Tower of Terror. She had an undiagnosed problem as well. I say this only to help put things in perspective. As someone else said, you will see warning signs for the more aggressive attractions, which might help you decide what's best for your family. You can also use Child Swap if you want to preview an attraction and decide from there.

It's Tough To Be A Bug might be one to preview if they're a bit skittish. Some less obvious attractions that seem to eat kids up are Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom, Jurassic Park at Islands of Adventure and Jaws at Universal Studios.

12 year old boy died on RnR just this past year.
Probably most deaths are related to some known or unknown previous health condition. There was a CM a few years ago that got run over by a float, and there was the girl who got her foot stuck on the splash mt boat this past year. I never did hear how she managed that.

With the exception of the more challengingside of Mission Space I wouldn't worry much unless you do have a known pre existing condition

:welcome: to the Dis! Be prepared to get nothing else done over the next few weeks! It is a serious addiction. My DH has recommended therapy. By the way LGMHPC is a Lime Green Mickey Head Paint Chip that many Dissers (I will mention no names) have managed to secure from local Home Depots across the country. HD has a disney paint collection and the samples are in shapes of a Mickey's Head. There is an alien green which is lime green. The more fanatic Dissers (again no names - but they have been in and out of 12 step programs) put on elaborate disquises, go to HD, pretend that they are actually considering painting their LR lime green, and leave with 20 samples so they can take them to WDW and hang them from their LG bags, fannie paks, bagallenis, crocs, and kids, so other Dissers can recognize them in the parks. LG is the official color. This is all info. I have gathered from other threads - I would not ever ::yes:: consider doing this. :rolleyes1 It is for the truly overboard Dissers!
