Our family of four are going on our first Disney cruise next May 31st. What kind of traditions/memories do people have out there to celebrate either the leaving of the ship from port or that first night at sea? We plan on Disney cruising as often as we can with the kids growing up and we'd like to start something we will remember for a long time.

:p :D  :bounce:

I have never given this much thought. i agree that the sailaway party is something that would occur the first day on the ship, and happens every cruise. Maybe taking bubbles to blow could be part of the tradition...

We are sailing on DCL cruise #6 (the first being the Maiden Voyage of the Magic back on 7/30/98) and we always attend the sailaway party with bubbles. We also love to go to the cabin and take a photo of the cabin door (I like to keep photos of all the room numbers we have stayed in). Late at night we have to walk the deck before bed. I can't sleep unless I know I was out their soaking up the great night air!!!

The kids make it a point to always attend the teen 411 on the first night to meet up with other friends.

Neat question. We always work our way to the back of the ship, usually the small aft deck on 7, as it is leaving Port Canaveral and take a few pictures. It is typically deserted or quiet and we have a little family time. The photos of the family leaning against the rail with the wake and port behind you are keepers. Last time we had one of the RCL ships trailing us, and my daughter looked particularly beautiful.

Speaking of traditions, I like the door thing. We do a tradition that started decades ago as a way to waste the last couple of pictures on a roll of film. We take a picture of everyone's feet on the last day of vacation. Silly, I know, but we have 20 years of feet pictures...hiking boots, swim fins, ski boots, sandals, bare feet. 2 pair before kids, more feet with kids, even more feet with friends and family. Yes, we make everyone stand in a circle and squeeze their feet into a photo --- and, yes, we do get some odd looks. To each, his own...

One of the things I don't do on the first night is skip my usual dining rotation for Palo's or a buffet.

I think it is important when you are sitting with other folks you might not know to get there the first night, you want to get to know them right away!

We just hit the sales at Target this weekend (believe me when I say they DO NOT sell sunscreen in Minnesota in January) and we bought some mini-bubble packs. We can't wait to use them at the sail away party :jester: :jester: :jester: :jester: :jester:

I was at A.C. Moore (craft store) last night and they had two boxes of mini bubbles on sale for $5.00, reg. $5.99 per box. Each box has 24 bottles in them with the wand in the cap. They were in the wedding section of the store.

I do not know how this compares to Target's prices on mini-bubbles.
