Today, I was driving my DD home from camp. We were stopped at a red light waiting to go straight (we were first in line) and there was a woman to my left in the turning lane. All of the sudden I heard a HUGE boom and looked left in time to see a man flying thru the air, landing on the ground next to my door!

He was wearing a motorcycle helmet but I couldn't see the cycle anywhere. I hopped out as did the woman next to me. The man was very disoriented, kept trying to get up and we were trying to calm him and make him stay down while others called 911. Thank heavens he was wearing a helmet and a heavy coat.

The police were there very quickly with the paramedics close behind. Well, it turns out, this jerk was hot rodding up and down the road (there were a bunch of witnesses) and popped a wheelie coming up to the red light. He mis-judged the distance and hit the woman next to me. He hit her back, driver-side bumper, went up and over her car and landed next to me. He lost his shoe in the process. When the woman got out, she thought he was under her car because the motorcycle was on her side of the car and he was next to me.

What makes me mad is that my 4 yo DD had to witness this. It is one thing when it is really an "accident" but this guy was just being a jerk and this was completely avoidable. DD is still wary sometimes because we were hit last year and she still talks about it and now we have to go thru all the explanations again.

I wish there was a test for common sense to go along with getting a license.

I wish there was a test for common sense to go along with getting a license.

I don't think a lot of people would get their license then!!!!

Sorry you had to go through that!!!

I'm so sorry you and you daughter had to experience that. :(People really need to use more common sense on the roads. I hate it when some people only think they're the only ones on the road and no one else. Jeez.

Ok, please don't take this the wrong way because I am sure it was very terrifying to witness but the mental picture I got of a dude flying over a car with one shoe on and one shoe off made me laugh. I would have busted a gut standing over this guy waiting for the parametics to get there and probably would have told my daughter, "See dear, this is why you should always wear a helmet and clean socks when you are riding a motorcycle. You never know when the motorcycle will start to buck and throw you and your shoe off." Well either that or I would have given the guy a card with the phone number to the circus since he can't ride a bike, maybe he can get a job getting shot out of a cannon.

Before I get flamed from bikers, my DH has several Harleys and I had one until I got pregnant with DS6.

That being said, I WISH that bikers would realize that it is an imperfect world and although every driver should be careful and cautious, bikers have to be especially careful out there. People don't see them, don't care, TRY to hit them... Please wear your helmets, and don't ride like a crazy person!!

One time we were driving home from the beach at night, and these 4 very loud bikers drove past us, (I was over the speed limit, and they passed me like I was standing still.) Then from back where we were, I noticed they were bobbing up and down. Huh? They got stopped by a light, and then I got close enough to see what they were doing...They were all doing wheelies while they were driving down the highway...No helmets, shorts, tennis shoes...all at about 65 MPH.. Oh my heart is racing just recalling it.. It really scares me what some of these guys do because they think they are immortal, when acting like this, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Another time, we were driving up Caesar's head, a favorite drive or motorcycle ride. We saw these guys on BMW's going up and around the curves way too fast, passing on MOUNTAIN curves, OMG, here goes my heart again. The day after we got home, I heard that they got into an accident doing that, and one of them was killed.:(

Biker's- Please wear a helmet. Driver's-Please be careful, motorcyclists are everywhere

He sounds like a candidate for the Darwin Award to me.

This is very scary. My niece lost her godfather (38years old) in motorcycle accident last week. He leaves behind a wife a 6 and 4 year old. Lets be thankful this situation wasnt worse.

For some reason this struck me as funny. But I'm glad that's all he lost.

Looking at him lying on the road with one shoe was kind of funny in a weird way. Actually, what was funny was when some guy found the shoe and brought it over, he kind of stood there wondering what to do with it.

Really, I know he was very lucky....the motorcycle was one of those little Hondas and was destroyed and after seeing it, I was thankful he was at least awake and moving around.

That's awful.
Some motorcyclists are not too bright. This is motorcycle week here in NH and you can bet I'm avoiding the highway at ALL costs.
My friend witnessed a motorcyclist that was driving down one of our town's famous curvy roads, wayy too fast. He went up over the crest of a hill and t-boned a pick up truck that was turning left-had started the turn before this guy was visible. The truck was driven by one of my dad's friends. Needless to say, without the helmet on, that motorcyclist is in pretty bad shape from what I've heard. I wish they would slow down.

I'm sorry you and your daughter had to witness all that.

One night when I was around 18-19, I was working in a diner waiting tables. This diner had glass windows all along the entire front of the restaurant. Well, I was looking out and I really couldn't make out what I was seeing, it just looked like a garbage bag flying over top a car somehow. It didn't take long till I realized what had happened and I called for an ambulance right away. One of the waitresses (today she's my SIL, but I was single at the time) went over to help out (she's an RN today and had that knack about her). Anyway, she came back shaking all over and her white uniform was drenched in blood. Came to find out, this man was the father of one of my friends. He spent many months in the hospital and never recovered completely, though he was able to get around. It happened so fast that I just couldn't believe it for a bit.

That guy showing off today is a pretty lucky guy IMO!

Oh Geez. Even though he was careless, I hope he's okay. I just HATE motorcycles. I don't use the term Hate loosely. My BIL was in a very bad motorcycle accident over a year ago (wasn't his fault), and is still recovering. His whole pelvic area has been replaced with metal plates, he cannot drive to this day, and walks with a cane... when he can walk. They are just death traps if you ask me.

I absolutely love bikes. I always have. My dad had them when I was a kid, my dh had them when were were dating and after we were married for a few years. And now our dd loves them. The trouble is I am a reformed idiot myself and it scares me to death when I think of my dd on a bike because all I can picture is the stupid things I did on them, the stupid things my dh (then dbf) did on them, and even the stupid things my mom told me that she and my dad did on them.

A funny story about a bike: My dd Ashli offered a guy from one of her classes a ride to his dorm because it was raining. He told her no thanks because he had his bike. Ashli and a friend that was standing there perked right up because they both love bikes. He told them he'd give them a ride sometime and the girls left. (and made jokes all the way home that the only thing that would make this super hott guy any better was if he belonged to a band, lol). They ran into him a few days later and asked about their ride. He started bragging about how fast his bike was and said that around a particular curve he could get it going fast enough that he didn't even have to peddle! Ashli said she stood there dumbfounded and later kept joking that she thought he had a harley but it turned out to be a huffy!

Can you imagine what you would have found if he hadn't been wearing a helmet!! I can't believe in PA helmets are now optional. They enforce seatbelts in vehicles but no helmets on motorcyles. Idiotic. My ILS got in a motorcycle accident when they were going about 25mph and were severely injured. I will never ride one, or let my kids if I can help it!!

It's a little known fact but if a person is thrown from a motorcycle, loses a shoe, hits his head and goes into shock you should give them Cotton Candy! Yes folks, Cotton Candy has been shown to cure shock AND it promotes brain cell growth so that when they wake up they don't want to ride motorcycles anymore. So if you want to help stop unnecessary motorcycle accidents, stop by the Fair Food poll and vote for Cotton Candy. Incidently, Cotton Candy when placed inside the helmet provides an additional level of protection in case you fall on your head. Think about it.

I don't blame you for being angry.

I lost a dear, dear friend, at a very young age himself due to a motorcycle (minus helmet) accident. :( That man is very lucky to be alive.

{{HUGS}} for you and DD. (My DD still recalls the time we got 'hit' in the school parking lot, nothing as traumatic as what your DD saw.) I totally understand. :(

I second this advice. A few years ago at Baylor we lost a student, one of many during my time there :(, because he wasn't wearing a helmet when he crased his Harley. If he had a helmet on he wouldn't have died.

Would you rather look 'cool' and be dead, or would you rather wear a helmet and be alive? I'd rather wear a helmet and live. And if a biker thinks that he will win in a match-up against a car (let alone a big SUV) then may the angles be with him.
