I just returned from my first trip to Disney’s Hilton Head Island and wanted to share some information on spas, golf, and food for those of you about to go.
We spent a Saturday – Saturday in a 2-bedroom villa; Room 2222. It was a Marsh view but had lots of trees between our porch and the Marsh. Very quiet with a building between ours and the pool/spa.
The primary purpose of the trip was a ladies only golf trip – BUT, we did share some great meals and some spa time. First, the spa. We did all our own reservations (rather than go through the resort). Two of us headed to the Ocean Tides Spa in the Hilton Oceanfront Hotel in Palmetto Bay Resort. DF had the Ocean Tides Signature Facial – her first facial – and loved it. 50 minutes for $95 (18% gratuity included, tax extra). I had the 80 minute Aromatherapy Hot Stones Facial ($125) and loved it! Well worth the money and included a neck, shoulder, and arms massage. She would have also done a calf and foot massage but I have a “don’t touch my feet” fetish.
Two of us arranged for a Dolphin Tour (through the recreation folks at the resort). We went out on Wednesday, Member day, and had Captain Ryan. It was a wonderful experience and we saw lots of Dolphins. Member day price was $36 per person. Note that you will pay for at least three folks, whether you have three folks to go or not. We only had two, but did pay the extra. Still, well worth it.
As far as the golf, there were four of us that played four courses during the week. We did not experience any negative feelings from the pro shops or starters – we all play between 5 and 18 handicaps so no “ugh, a group of ladies” comments. Not that we expected any, but you still cannot be sure. The pro shops had some fantastic selections of women’s clothing which was a huge surprise to us – we loved it.
First, we played Robert Trent Jones course in Palmetto Dunes. We got a great deal of $62 per person per course if we played all the Palmetto Dunes courses so we jumped on that deal. The Jones course heads out to the ocean and was absolutely beautiful. We also played the Arthur Hills course (lots of alligators) and the George Fazio course (60+ bunkers on the course). All were beautiful and we are looking forward to playing them again in the future (yes, we are planning another trip!). Our tee times were 9:40 am each day and we were done each round at just 4 hours! A great pace of play.
Our fourth course was the Ocean Course at Sea Pines. This was $115 per person and was just as beautiful – although we saw more of the Ocean on the Jones course at Palmetto Dunes than we did here. This course was a little more crowded but we still completed the round in 4.5 hours. Note, even though we had a tee time, we still had to pay the $5 entry fee to gain access to the Sea Pines grounds.
Now the food! Boy, did we eat!
Kingfisher Seafood & Steak House (Shelter Cove) – for two, including a bottle of wine $82.40 + tip. Wonderful food and atmosphere. I had the Talapia dish and DF had the Salmon. Both were delicious.
Old Fort Pub (Hilton Head Plantation) – for two, including drinks and tip $155. A great view and food was delicious. This is a 4.5 star restaurant – we did have two problems (1) we were not offered dark napkins (others were) and yet we have black slacks on – left with lots of white fuzz on us (2) the Main gate at Hilton Head Plantation would not let us in 20 minutes early even though we had a reservation – we just went around to the back gate and had no problem. Seems the back gate is closer to the restaurant and used to folks going there (more so than the main gate). We did let the restaurant know the main gate turned us away. I had the steak and DF had the Grouper.
For breakfast one morning, we headed to the Palmetto Sunrise Café at the marina – nice quiet location and for two, we paid $21.23 for breakfast. Otherwise, we got breakfast food for the room.
After golf at Sea Pines, we headed to the Salty Dog Café for lunch and frozen drinks. For four of us, not including tip, we paid $65.35. Very yummy! We shared spinach Dip, steamed shrimp, and hushpuppies and split two sandwiches: The Land Shark and the Salty Dog Special.
One night, two of us ordered in from Guiseppi’s in Shelter Cove – they delivered to the resort. $18 with tip for a small portion of spaghetti and stuffed shells with garlic bread. Found the menu in the phone book. The other two members of the group headed to the Ocean Grille in Shelter Cove – don’t have the price but they enjoyed it.
Red Fish – Our BEST meal of the trip was on the last night! Well worth the short 10 minute drive. For four, with a bottle of wine, $161.32 without tip. I ordered the Latin ribs and they were the hit of the table. Others got Scallops, Braised Pork, and Cobia (special of the night).
We did eat also at the Mexican restaurant in Shelter Cove (cannot remember the name). I didn’t pay so I’m not sure what the cost was but the food was very good.
We drove from Maryland and with four quick stops, made it to Hilton Head in 11 hours. We did drive my Civic Hybrid and only used a little over a tank of gas – getting approximately 47 mpg.
We loved the resort and the golf at Hilton Head and will probably return in 2010. Going after Easter but before Memorial Day was perfect – crowds were low but the weather was fantastic – sunny and 75-80 each day.
