My daughter needs to do a diorama about pythons...it needs to be about where they live...which is mainly the rainforest...anyone have any ideas on what she can use to make this thing?? I am the LEAST artsy person there is so I am not much help to her....it can't be to involved though because I want it to be something she can do 99 percent of the work on herself...

sorry misread title
was gonna suggest pepto

let me send my 3rd grader over, she did her last diorama 100% herself and got 100...

but seriously, DD9 says

find a little kids book on pythons, and look at one of the pages where its shows their surroundings. Use a juice bag box, (capri sun is what she means) cut it so one side flops open. use felt, to make the rain forest, because she's in 1st grade, the cut outs dont have to be perfect. She should take the outside of the box, and cover it with construction paper, and make sure that she puts her name on the top, so when people are looking at it, they know she did the cool work. YOu can find sticks outside to use as the tree the snake is hiding in.

okay thats the 4th graders idea.

Green garbage bags make great folliage when cut into shapes of grass and leaves. Playdoh is good for making little bugs and critters.

My DD had to do one in 3rd grade and I got some great materials at Michael's for her to put together. She did it in a shoebox. We used scrapbooking paper for the background, and I also bought felt and stuff like that.

Sounds a little ambitious for first grade.

I though a spelling test consisting of the words holidays, Thanksgiving, and November was aggressive.

What happened to playing 7UP in 1st grade?
I recall learning basic math and some elementary page reading.

its not ambitious- its about something they're learning about and it is suppose to be done 100% by them. The teacher isnt lookin for perfection. They're expecting the child to show what they know about a specific subject. My girls, usually have to pick a scene out of a book, and depict that scene

we enjoy them here...(when they remember the directions)

Well I am sure she is not expecting a lot..she just wants them to do the best they can..they also have to write a short report on the subject they are doing the diorama on and read it out loud in class...for spelling words it so varies in her class...they are broken into groups and each group has different words..one group may have "to, no, do, cat, dog", while another group has "Saturday, November, Split, Against"....
Thanks e veryone for the ideas...at least now we have some ideas to go on!

My daughter is in 1st grade too and has already done a diorama this year. She did it on dinosaurs. We use a shoebox. I looked up pics of dinos on the computer and printed them. Then I laminated them and cut them out. Put little stands on them and placed them in the shoebox standing up right after she colored it to look like sky and sand. Put some easter grass in there to look like grass and even used easter shaped eggs in there as dinosaur eggs. I think the shoebox is the easiest way to display stuff in a diorama.

When is this due?

Do you have a craft store near you? Like AC Moore or Michaels?

They sell trees for projects like this. Also, look in the scrapbook section for tree paper to paper the back of the box. See if they have some sort of ground paper for the bottom of the box.

Get model magic clay for the snake.

If you need trees - empty paper towel rolls are a great start to trees.

Its not due until the 5th...I figured we would work on it this weekend...I will try to check out michaels on Friday if I can get near the door LOL...thanks

You can go to an aquarium store and buy some of those plastic plants that they put in fish tanks. Get a shoe box & cover the inside "walls" of it with blue paper on the top half (for sky) & green paper on the bottom half (for ground/grass). Put the aquarium plants around and the snake of course slithering out from under one of the plants.
