First Fort Trip, Had a Great time, Thanks all. New pics posted 3/23

Last January we left IL in the RV with -30 below windchills. It was winterized and we didn't start running water through the lines until we hit southern KY. Also hubby added heat tape around a couple lines due to the extreme cold. On the way back we had to stop and drain all the water tanks and add antifreeze to the drains a little bit. Just enough to keeps the elbow parts from freezing up. Hubby finished the winterizing when we got back home.

Well this morning I woke to -6 degrees on the thermometer and a -25 degree windchill :sad2:, it has since warmed to -3 and a -20 windchill. I grew up in Indiana snowmobiling in this kinda temps, but have gotten a bit older and not liking it so much anymore. We will keep the trailer pretty much winterized until our first stop in SC. We will be adding about 10 gallons right before we leave for using the toilet. Hopefully by the end of the month it is at least up to freezing. :cold:

We do the same thing hitting the road in January completely winterized and dewinterize on the first nights stop. I usually just keep a gallon or two of house tap water in the bathroom for flushing and baby wipes for "washing" until that first stop. Then I carry some water for flushing/washing water.

That maybe an easier way to go this time if the weather doesn't cooperate. I have a few gallon jugs sitting around. Nice idea. Thank you.

Yikes, just reading this thread makes me see another side of having an RV up north! Can't imagine dealing with all that y'all have to contend with!

Yes, we have some other issues to deal with having a RV in the colder climates. The first half of the winter wasn't too bad, but the last month it has been snow and more snow and ice and some more snow. And we don't even have it as bad here as some of our fellow RVer's up in the Northeast. The cold just means my packing is coming along slowly and more and more stuff is piling up in our living room, much to the dismay of my wife.

So today we have spent Valentines day loading the camper in spite of the snow and going over our packing lists to make sure we have all that we need for our stay at the Fort. We leave in two weeks. Getting excited. :jumping2:

aahhh, the 2 week warning. Time to start going over the lists repeatedly.

Well light snow all day yesterday probably about 4 inches of light fluffy snow. Not sure of an exact total as the winds were in the range of 45 mph and it was blowing and drifting all over. So I had some spot that were bare and some drifts of two feet. Got the driveway cleared off and the path to the shop cleared. Forecast is for another storm Monday night. Will it ever end ?? Wife and I got alot of things packed yesterday or set up in the house to go out in the trailer. Making a list and checking it twice, then making a list to check my list. Getting the camera and gear packed and ready to go.
Today will get more packed, and go over my lists again. Windy and cold with drifting snow, but the sun is out and well it is 2 degrees. Come on Fort !!!!

Packing today and adding things to the trailer, had the great idea before we leave I should pack a cooler full of snow and bring it down for our campsite. This way I won't be homesick for the first hour or two.

PLEASE tell me you are joking....

Yeah image all the uproar you would cause, I can see the headlines now,... "A cooler full of snow spotted today at Disney's Fort Wilderness, plow truck are being dispatched now!!" :lmao:

I think I would try and leave soon and just work your way down south and thaw out bebefore you get here.

That is is funny. If I where in more of the areas with snow, I would probably do that myself with the cooler of snow. though I would likely use it as free ice to keep stuff cold.

We had pretty similar stuff here on the MD/VA boarder. Cold cold weather and then the heat pump pitched its aux heat grid. Right now we are trying to figure out if its repair or replace kind of item.

Well good luck with getting the heat pump back up functioning. Last night we only got about an inch of snow. Cold again today and snow for the weekend. Packing the trailer and working on a spice rack. Hope to post pics later tonight of the rack. Looks like I am going to have to plug in and fire up space heater in the trailer so I can pack the remainder of the food stuffs.

the unit works somewhat. Not sure if I would prefer the compressor go, or the Heating Grid. I think I would rather on Emergency heat over having to get what heat we can through the compressor and not have the electric heating grid. At this point it can maintain the house if its above 25F. But below that we have to have a nice toasty fire for the system to keep up.

Good luck on the spice rack, a little heater about an hour before you head out there should knock most of the bad chill out of the air. I don't even want to think what you ware looking at temp wise if we are looking at 11F high and -3 low on Thursday.
